A (horny) word in your ear: the growing desire for audio erotica The erotic audio industry is booming as listeners seek an ethical and more immersive alternative to porn. So what does it take to write and voice modern sexual appetites? In search of answers, @miles.ellingham went beyond the research and tried his hand at writing an erotic story of his own. Swipe to listen to a taster, then read the full piece at the link in our bio. Extract read by @xxautumnivyxx @autumnivyacts of @bloomstories.official. Artwork by @elizabourner 30 Oct 2026 On the cover of this weekend’s O, The Observer Magazine: Very Horny Voices. What does the rise of audio erotica tell us about modern desire? A few months ago, @miles.ellingham travelled to Amsterdam, home to many of the voice actors behind the genre, to find out why narrative porn is having a moment. “Scripts are meant to be expansive, not mechanical, with narratives that encompass sex, not the other way around,” Miles writes in this week’s cover story. And, inspired by the voice actors and producers he met along the way, he decided to try his hand at writing one himself. Read the full piece in this Sunday's Magazine or online now. Pls grab a copy. It’s about the end of the world and how we talk about it @theobserveruk - big thanks to @andrimagnason who the piece follows. 20 Sep 2026 Glaciers are not supposed to stop moving, but in 2014 one did. Iceland has roughly the same amount of this moving ice as the Himalayas, and the latter’s glaciers supply water to China, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan – about 1.9 billion people. Glaciers function as natural archives, trapping prehistoric air, which can be tapped and studied. They act as the health meter for the world, and that meter is dwindling because the glaciers are melting at an alarming pace. In order to talk about the slow death of the world, we need some kind of a starting point. As far as activist Andri Snær Magnason is concerned, that starting point is the receding glaciers of Iceland. Twelve years ago, in Iceland, the unthinkable occurred: the first glacier died, meaning it had shrunk so much that it could no longer move. Its name was Okjökull. @miles.ellingham travels to Iceland to see Okjökull and meet Magnason. Read the full piece at our link in bio. Photographs by @einarfalur for The Observer Picture editor @cherylnewman1 18 Sep 2026 @carlitorovelli, the bestselling theoretical physicist, believes time travel is improbable but not impossible. @miles.ellingham transports Rovelli back to the 1970s: “In Bologna, the centre of Italy’s left-wing hotbed, Carletto, as he was then called, a student, is having a lot of sex. That’s not all he’s doing, but it’s no small part of it. Carletto’s comrades have sex like they’re exchanging business cards.” When they are not having sex, Carletto and his friends are agitating for a world in which “work and the police are abolished and ‘cigarettes no longer taste like tear gas’.” But then, when he is 25, something remarkable happens to Rovelli: he comes under the spell of an excitable elderly professor and he is awakened to the rival joys of quantum mechanics… Over the course of two days with Rovelli at his home in Madrid, and armed with his GCSE knowledge of the universe, Miles asks the physicist all the big questions. Is time real? Why do string theorists and loop theorists loathe one another? And whatever happened to Carletto? Find out by reading the full interview at our link in bio. '“Deindustrialised” is a word you read a lot when researching the town, mostly in relation to commercial fishing, but it doesn’t tell the whole story.' @miles.ellingham heads to the seaside home of Joyland to discover more. They've endured disappointment, ridicule and countless false dawns — often at enormous personal cost. So what keeps them coming back? They were actually making Borat — a global sensation that won Sacha Baron Cohen a Golden Globe and depicted Glod's residents as backwards, inbred, and criminal. For today’s piece, Miles Ellingham travelled there to ask an obvious question: what happened to the people left behind? Click the link in bio to read the full piece. 21 May 2026
