Her father, Matti Peled, was a notable Israeli Major-General & peace activist & her grandfather, Avraham Katsnelson, was a signatory of Israel’s Declaration of Independence. Her brother, Miko Peled, is an activist for Palestinian rights. She faced personal tragedy when her daughter, Smadar, was killed at the age of thirteen in the 1997 Ben Yehuda Street suicide attack in Jerusalem. Nurit Peled-Elhanan is Emeritus Professor at @HebrewUniversity & at David Yellin Academic College in Jerusalem. She has received several awards for her work, among which is the Sakharov Prize for Human Rights & Freedom of Thought, awarded by the European Parliament. She’s also the Co-initiator of the Russell Tribunal on Palestine from 2009 to 2014. She has published, edited & written extensively on classroom discourse, oral & written language development at school, & racism in Israeli schools & in schoolbooks. Her research, culminating in the book “Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology & Propaganda in Education,” critiques these textbooks for marginalising Palestinians. She argues that this educational approach primes Israeli children for military service, reinforcing Jewish-Israeli territorial identity & legitimising massacres of Palestinians.
