The midterms were a huge repudiation of Donald Trump and his presidency, but there were two key groups that turned against him: young men and Hispanic and Latino voters.
They helped propel Trump to victory in 2024 but this time around, they swung sharply towards the Democrats.
Charles Hunt, an associate professor of political science at Boise State University in Idaho unpacks what that means on this week's episode of The Conversation Weekly podcast.

It’s not just high-profile candidates like Sen. Jon Ossoff and Sen.-elect James Talarico that drew votes attention. Democratic enthusiasm and voter dissatisfaction with Trump showed up in races all the way down the ballot.
We spoke with Charlie Hunt who studies Congress and elections.

Behind the blue wave was Democratic turnout: “It’s insane.”
Voter numbers in some key areas were at levels typically seen only in presidential election years.
That surge in turnout helps explain why Democrats outperformed expectations in yesterday’s #midterms, according to political scientist Charlie Hunt.

President Trump is weaponizing the Department of Justice in a way that is “unconscionable.” That’s how former federal judge John E. Jones puts it.
Federal courts up to and including the Supreme Court pushed back against the Trump administration’s challenges to state election procedures.
Jones, who was appointed by George Bush in 2002, warns that the DOJ has become “completely unmoored from its mission,” arguing the flurry of interventionist lawsuits risks eroding the department’s credibility.

Does a delay in election results mean fraud? 🗳️
Not at all. Election night results are unofficial, and final results take time because there’s a lot of steps required to make sure it’s done correctly. There are deadlines – but in some states, officials have weeks by law to verify ballots, count them and double-check the tallies.
Mitchell Brown, an elections expert at Auburn University, explains how the slow and painstaking process, no matter how long it takes, helps ensure every eligible vote is counted accurately.
In #Florida, county election officials have 72 hours to submit their results, while the statewide certification takes place on the 14th day.

Some people are so worried about sunscreen that they’re swapping factor 50 for beef tallow. Yes, the fat traditionally used to make roast potatoes is now being promoted online as something you can spread on your skin before going into the sun.
Coconut oil and olive oil have their supporters, too. Meanwhile, other social media creators warn that conventional sunscreens contain dangerous chemicals, interfere with our hormones or prevent us from making vitamin D. Some even claim sunscreen causes cancer.
But how much of this is backed by science? And what happens to your skin when you swap a tested sunscreen for something from the kitchen cupboard?
In the latest episode of Strange Health, Katie Edwards investigates the anti-sunscreen movement with co-host Dan Baumgardt, a practising GP and lecturer at the University of Bristol.
This week’s guest is Charareh Pourzand, a professor of pharmaceutical biology at the University of Bath, who has spent more than 30 years investigating how sunlight affects skin.

Voting isn’t just good for democracy’s health, it could be good for your health. Older voters who cast a ballot have reduced mortality, according to a new, long-term health study.
Wisconsinites over 65 who voted in the 2008 election were 29% less likely to die in the next 15 years.
From research by Sara Konrath of Indiana University and Femida Handy, University of Pennsylvania.
