š« The Halloween candy bowl is tempting, but it should stay out of your petās reach.
A little extra caution can help keep Halloween fun and safe for everyone.
- Chocolate, xylitol, and certain other candy ingredients can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Instead, give your pet a Halloween treat made with pet-safe ingredients so they can join the celebration, too.
- Keep candy secured, remind kids not to share their treats with pets, and make sure your four-legged family members have a pet-friendly snack of their own.
If your pet gets into Halloween candy or another potentially harmful substance, our ER teams are here to help. Most of our hospitals are open 24/7, including Halloween.

Bowieās family knew something wasnāt right when he suddenly began vomiting and acting unusually tired, so they quickly brought him to their family veterinarian, who referred him to MedVet Hilliard for emergency care.
Our ER and Surgery teams worked together to investigate a suspected gastrointestinal obstruction. During emergency abdominal surgery, they discovered a serious and unexpected problem: more than 18 inches of bowel had become trapped and lost blood supply due to an internal adhesion.
The damaged section of bowel was removed, and Bowie made a strong recovery. Without treatment, this condition could have been life-threatening.
A reminder that you know your pet best. When something feels off, acting quickly can make all the difference. Weāre so grateful Bowieās family trusted their instincts and got him the care he needed.

š Halloween is better with your pet in the fun, but their costume should never come at the expense of comfort or safety.
Before your pet heads out for trick-or-treating, make sure their costume allows them to move, breathe, see, and hear comfortably. Skip anything that could overheat them, restrict movement, or become a choking hazard.
Stephanie and Kylie from MedVet Pittsburgh have a few tips to help you pick a costume thatās festive, fun, and pet-friendly. š»
