Here’s some of my advice for capturing birds in flight… 📸 🦅
Shutter Speed⚡️
It’s all about high shutter speed!!! (See the settings on my photos to see how high I go with my shutter)
Wing beats are some of the fastest motion you’ll ever try to freeze with a camera, so it can be a tricky shot to get right. As a base rule, keep your shutter as high as the light will allow! Ideally you would just go to 1/5000s every time.. but remeber, the faster the shutter, the darker the image, so you need to find the right balance for your conditions...
Exposure 💡
Use your camera’s light meter to help. It’s the small display that looks like this on your camera screen:
( — … 0 … + )
Use this to check whether your shot is too dark ( - ) or too bright ( + ). This will help you to work out just how high you can push your shutter.
Focal Length Rule 🎥
If shooting handheld, try to never let your shutter drop below your focal length. For example, at 600mm, 1/600 is a baseline for general photography... but for birds in flight you usually need to go considerably higher...
Burst Mode + Stability Tip 💪🏻
Dont try to guess where the bird will be and just take a single shot...Use ‘burst mode’ to take lots of shots in rapid succession. Track the bird with your eye pushed tightlyyy to your eyepiece viewfinder. This acts as an extra point of contact to the camera rather than all the weight being just in your arms and can help keep the long lens steady while you track the birds flight. Or alternatively, you can use a tripod 💪🏻
Bird photography is so much fun and incredibly addictive! There’s always something new to learn and improve on.
Let me know if this helps! Enjoy! 📸 🪶

Over the past few days, the 13 young African filmmakers taking part in the KWS–Nuru Storytelling Bootcamp have been out in Nairobi National Park and Nairobi Safari Walk, working in teams to capture wildlife and conservation stories.
With filming now complete, they are reviewing their footage, putting the pieces together and shaping the stories they set out to tell, with guidance from their mentors.
3 short films are taking shape, each offering a different perspective on wildlife, the people who protect it and the experiences Kenya’s parks offer.
All that remains is to bring the stories to the screen. We look forward to sharing the finished films and celebrate the work of these emerging filmmakers.

No crazy setup, no light diffuser, no focus stacking, here are some basic tips for taking single shot macro photos! 🦎
Feel free to tap to pause on the settings in the video and save this for later 🤝 📌
Focus 🔬
First off, the focus plain you are aiming for in macro is often so small so I always use Manual Focus, it lets you control exactly which narrow point is sharp. (Hot tip: obviously always go for the eyes!😅) Turn on Focus Magnification so you get an enlarged view, and switch on ‘Focus Peaking’ too, this mode outlines the sharpest points of your subject in colour which is a huge help!!
F-Stop ✋
Unlike most other areas of photography, where we usually want a nice shallow depth of field, macro is kinda different. When I’m not doing an image stack, i.e. a basic handheld single shot, a high f-stop actually puts more of the photo in focus. If you check my settings, you’ll spot a couple of f/9s, even an f/13! That would usually be crazy, but in the macro world it brings the whole scene or subject into focus. (Exception: my bee shot at f/2.5 — honestly not sure what I was thinking there. I’d go for f/5 next time!) So don’t be afraid of a high f-stop!
Shutter Speed ⏳
For most of these shots the shutter speed is quite high (with a one exception). This is basically to counter how tiny the focus plane is with these tiny wee lizards and insects, even the slight camera wobble from pressing the shutter button can be enough to throw off focus. A high shutter speed helps freeze that movement, even when the subject itself isn’t moving much.
ISO 💡
With the shutter speed and f-stop pushed up, if you don’t have access to extra lighting, don’t be afraid to bump the ISO up a little too, you can always de-noise in editing later if needed.
Hope these tips help! I love the world of macro, even though I feel like I just occasionally dapple and have so much to learn still, so if you’re a proper macro photographer, feel free to jump into the comments with tips or advice of your own! 🐝

So seeing as there is now OVER 70K of you guys!!!🤯
I thought I’d do the classic “intro” post but recently I have been receiving soo many messages asking about my ‘filmmaking journey’ and how I got into this career…
Firstly, there is soooo many people who have helped me along the way! And I cannot thank them enough for that.
I’ve been pretty tunnel-vision focused on ‘becoming a filmmaker’ since I was a teenager…I’ve had so much rejection and failings along the way but I have stuck at it and recently things have become such an adventure that thousands of you lovely people have started to follow along…I will do a separate ‘advice/ career tips’ post soon too but for now;
Swipe across for my story… 🛹 🛼🎥 📺 📚🐾 🌎

🐦 The puffins are officially back in Scotland!!🏴
Tap and hold any point in this video to copy my camera settings! 📸 🤝 🪶
Location:📍Isle of May🏴
And here are more tips for photography these amazing birds:
✈️ PUFFINS IN FLIGHT
Crank your shutter speed up HIGH ( at least 1/3000s but you will see from the reel, I go much higher than that when the light is good so I can FREEZE the wings) Track the birds as they move. Puffins tend to repeat the same flight loops, so take some time to study their circuit before you start shooting!
🎪 WATCH THE ‘CIRCUS’
A group of puffins is called a circus! No joke! 😅 So pick out individuals with great character rather than trying to capture everything at once.
🐟 SPOT THE SANDEELS
Keep an eye out for puffins carrying sandeels in their beaks! Those are the individuals and moments that make for the iconic shots!
🌿 STAY ON THE PATH
Don’t accidentally stand on a puffin borrow! 🤦♀️ Use a long lens and keep your distance. The puffins will reward your patience by getting on with their business naturally which makes for better shots 👌
Honestly, a puffin colony is one of the greatest days out in nature the UK has to offer. Enjoy and hope the camera settings help 🩵

“Being in the wild with a camera, I dunno if you can beat that” 📸🫶
Time spent in nature; in a freezing cold waterfall or photographing some birds or just drinking some coffee by a loch…To me it’s the absolute best thing for drowning out the loudness of ‘normal life’…

Come edit with me! 📸 🦛 🎨 💻
And drop me a follow for more 🫶
@libby.penman
THE PROCESS ⏳
Instead of one general global edit, I used loads of individual masks to target very specific parts of the shot! Building contrast and light gradually rather than one quick and easy push.
For sure lots more time and effort but I think this technique makes for a more interesting final image?
SETTINGS 📸:
600mm, 1/1000s, F/6.3, ISO 1600.
🎥 Sony A1. 🖌️Adobe Lightroom.
EDIT TIP 🎨: Don’t just randomly paint in light with the masking / brush tool. Zoom in close and study your raw file; even in a really dark, underexposed image, you’ll see where the natural light is already hitting. That’s your blueprint!
Use the raw file as a guide and with a brush tool brighten those exact natural sections, hopefully this will make for a bolder final image!
What do you think?👇

My sister and I are twins from Kirkcaldy in Scotland, and we usually do very different jobs (wildlife filmmaker and sports businesswoman)! Pip is a Scot living in the Big Apple, and this summer we teamed up in NYC to shoot football content ahead of the World Cup! Although, of course, I also captured some quick wildlife moments when I was out in the concrete jungle!
Pip co-founded @womeninSoccer, a network that exists to make the football (soccer) industry more diverse! Stay tuned for more!
