Four years ago today, Beyoncé dropped her Lemonade visual album, in which I am honored to have contributed my art to her vision that presented Yoruba spirituality and culture so beautifully. Our culture is so rich, and has fueled my artistic imagination for my entire lifetime. Connecting with the symbols in my art affects me and other artists because it’s a connection to one of the most profound and sophisticated systems of storytelling to ever grace the earth. TED Talk: Often when people see my Art they call it "tribal." To Western people "tribal" is a term to describe typically Polynesian Art that is often used in tattoos and because my art is repetitive with lots of patterns people make the same assumption. However, I am Yoruba and my Art reflects my culture. The masks represent people. The different types of masks imply different things, like sizes of the mask, open eyes or closed eyes for example. Also, the patterns are narratives, they also are for movement. My style of Art is not something you see everyday and it's very frustrating when people try and tell me what my Art is or isn't.
