I had the opportunity to join the finale of a 2 year activism campaign that just brought Max Mara literally to their knees before finally announcing a fur free policy. Truly inspiring amidst the bleakness of capitalism to realize the power and leverage we still have. The suffering that animals go through in fur farms is unimaginable, did you know it takes 50 anally electrocuted and skinned alive foxes - cousins to dogs - to produce ONE hideous fur coat? Couldn’t imagine a more surreal and perfect ending to 2023 than doing some activism on the behalf of a lonely, sad elephant that continues to be exploited for profit at the LA Zoo, despite the city council’s motion to move him to a proper sanctuary. The night wouldn’t have been complete without dancing and moshing with friends at the @blacklips_ show. So fucking epic! As happy as I am to put this year to rest, I’m afraid to let it go. Within its timeline I grew a decade, experienced the loss of my best friend, my child, my soul sister, my shadow that accompanied me every waking day, while every night we dreamt together. The beauty in the transformations and my closer understanding of the unseen world is a lot to be thankful for. As is the freedom to go out and have fun. Privilege is not being buried under rubble at 2 years old, losing my entire family, home and indigenous land to neocons waging genocide for oil and control. Privilege is having a choice to speak up against violence towards innocent people. Privilege is speaking up for animals being massacred on factory farms, 23 million a day in the US alone. I once dated a guy that went to rodeos and thought they were “cool” simply because he was into western aesthetic and drinking beer. It saddens me to think millennials (i.e. not from Ancient Rome) would be so disconnected from such inhumane barbaric acts of violence toward living souls. I never supported or attended rodeos, but as ignorance is bliss I also never gave much thought to them. Only recently after getting involved in supporting council member @bobblumenfield ‘s ordinance to ban them in L.A., did I become enlightened to the horror, the extreme cruelty and suffering at the core of these “entertainment” events. Broken backs, organ bleeding, bucking straps, electric prods, punctured lungs, viscous spurring, strangling, gaping wounds—these innocent beings are subjected to an exhausting, fearful, anxiety ridden life of pain and abuse. The worst part? If they manage to survive fatal injuries, they’re sent off to the slaughterhouse once deemed worn out.
