Today, Los Angeles proudly recognizes Mother Cabrini Day, honoring Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, the first American citizen canonized as a saint, who devoted her life to serving immigrants, orphans, and the sick. Alongside Councilmembers @timmcoskerla and @councilmemberjohnlee we celebrate her legacy of compassion and courage and what it means to our city's immigrant communities. Thank you @mario_amalfitano_originale for leading this effort and for @littleitalyoflaassociation for helping coordinate today. May this historic day remind us all to lift up those in need, just as Mother Cabrini did.

Un italiano al giorno.
We are celebrating Italian-American Heritage Month with "Un Italiano al giorno," starting with our founder, Joe Buscaino.
Joe is a proud first-generation Italian American whose parents emigrated from Sicily to San Pedro in pursuit of a better future.
The Buscainos worked hard and loved even harder.
Through their many sacrifices they instilled in their children the enduring values of family, friendship, community, tradition and warm Italian hospitality.
Joe cherished those values and made them his own.
After a successful career as a police officer, Joe entered public office and was elected to the Los Angeles City Council, representing Council District 15.
For Joe, Italian heritage means family, faith, service, and giving back.
During his time on the Los Angeles City Council, he championed the recognition and celebration the contributions of Italian Americans and their contributions in Los Angeles. Joe also had the vision to create a Little Italy in San Pedro to honor its rich history and the generations of Italian-American immigrants who helped shape the community.
That legacy lives on in Piazza Miramare, a lasting tribute to San Pedro's Italian roots.
Today, on the first day of Italian-American Heritage Month, we celebrate our own Joe, his family's inspiring journey, and all the generations who have preserved and passed down our cherished Italian heritage.

Dinner tonight with my friend and fellow Italian American, former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, in his Italian neighborhood of Brooklyn. 🇮🇹
Two sons of Italy, 3,000 miles apart, sharing a table and the blessings of our heritage.
We talked about family, our stories, and the sacrifices our family made coming to the greatest country on earth along with sharing stories of leading the largest two cities in the US.
I'm the child of Italian immigrants, and nights like this remind me where I come from and why I served. Grateful for the friendship @billdeblasio , the great food, and the family that made us who we are. Also, great to have @luca_dileva17 at the table who put in the miles (2 hour turnaround time) to share this experience.

7/19/26 @longbeachtriathlon Supertri, Long Beach, Sprint Triathalon. Bucket list item, checked off.✅
Didn’t know what to expect going in — but watching my barber @mitchel_subterranean_wilson, a total triathlon vet, kept me locked in.
Before my race, I watched the para-triathlon athletes compete. Pure inspiration! I witnessed the best of humanity on display — every walk of life, cheering each other across that finish line.
Shoutout to my trainers Eddie @heydayelitefitness and Lawrence @porttownfitness and to my @everspanlife health advisor Gianna and to @izzitano2.0 for the motivation — you all pushed me here.
I’m hooked. This was just race one . 🏊🚴🏃
If there’s something on your bucket list — stop waiting for the “right time.” Sign up, show up, and let the process turn you into someone who can finish it. You’re more capable than you think!

Yesterday World Cup came to a close — and what a run it’s been for Los Angeles.
Years ago, I was proud to introduce the motion at LA City Council to help bring this tournament to our City. Seeing it come to life, and watching what it did for Angelenos, has been the honor of a lifetime.
Eight matches at SoFi Stadium. 180,000+ visitors welcomed. Hundreds of millions in economic impact flowing to our hotels, restaurants, and — most importantly — our local small businesses. But the real win wasn’t on the scoreboard. It was in the streets, the fan zones, the local bars packed with new faces, and the pride of a City that showed the world who we are.
From the love of community to the support of our local businesses — everyone scored.
Thank you, LA. Thank you, world. See you in 2028.

For years, we talked about bringing world-class events to our waterfront — yesterday, West Harbor opened its gates for the first time as an official World Cup Fan Zone.
This is what we envisioned when we fought to bring these soccer matches to LA: a moment where San Pedro isn’t on the sidelines of something big — we’re hosting it. Watching this waterfront come alive yesterday, with the ships passing behind the screen and the community packed in, is everything what we fought for...and this is only the beginning for our Waterfront!
More today at West Harbor as Argentina takes on England at Noon as well as Saturday's 3 place match and Sunday's Final!

This morning I received a call I’ll never forget — from both our Assemblyman and Councilman — sharing the devastating news that Eric Washington was murdered last night in Compton while trying to keep peace in his neighborhood. Even now, hours later, it doesn’t feel real.
Eric served as my field deputy in Watts, and there was no one more dedicated to that community. Every single day, he showed up ready to make Watts a better place — not because it was his job, but because it was his calling. He believed in that community with his whole heart, and he backed that belief up with action, year after year.
Eric was so much more than a colleague. He was a son, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, friend, mentor, and peacemaker. He was a trailblazer and a public servant in the truest sense of the word.
It was an honor to work alongside him. My former team and I are shaken to our core by this senseless, tragic loss. Eric spent his life trying to bring peace to his community, and it is almost unbearable that peacekeeping is what cost him his life.
Rest in power, Eric Washington. Watts — and all of us who knew you — are better because you walked among us. Our hearts are with your family, friends, your fraternity brothers, and everyone who loved you.

🇭🇷 What a run, Croatia! Proud to have watched this team battle through the World Cup — heart, grit, and that unmistakable Vatreni fight all the way to yesterday’s tough 2-1 loss to Portugal. Not the ending we wanted (worthy of a LAPD crime report), but a tournament to be proud of.
And with Italy sitting this one out again 🤨 our love for Croatian football only burns brighter this summer. Standing with my Croatian neighbors — hvala for letting us feel the passion up close and for Nonno for introducing me to Rakija 🥃
Huge thank you to the San Pedro Croatian Hall for hosting us and bringing the community together to watch every match. This is what we envisioned here and throughout LA when we bided for the World Cup as a host City.
Now… flipping the jersey and the energy — Let’s go, USA! 🇺🇸⚽ Let's go, Mexico 🇲🇽 Time to bring it home for the co-hosts.

Una Serata Indimenticabile — A Night to Remember!
San Pedro’s Little Italy had the honor of welcoming Jacqueline and Aurelio De Laurentiis for their very first visit to our beloved neighborhood — and what a night it was.
From a stroll through Piazza Miramare, where the spirit of the old country lives on just steps from the sea, to an unforgettable dinner at Trani’s Dockside thanks to Dustin and his amazing team — it was a table full of laughter, stories, and the finest flavors of Ischia — the evening was everything our community is about.
Surrounded by the officers of the Little Italy Association of Los Angeles, Jacqueline & Aurelio broke bread with us the way it’s meant to be done — slowly, warmly, and among friends.
We are proud of what we’ve built here in San Pedro. Nights like this remind us why we build it.
Benvenuto, Jacquline & Aurelio. San Pedro ti aspetta sempre. 🇺🇸🇮🇹🇺🇸🇮🇹🇺🇸🇮🇹
