The kelp forest has been a pretty special place for me since I started diving around California (13 years ago now!). It’s such an important ecosystem for carbon sequestration, can provide emissions reduction, vital habitat and nursery grounds for a variety of animals, amongst a myriad of other roles that it plays in our world. It’s an incredibly dynamic place that I have the great fortune of exploring on a regular basis and I hope we can manage our oceans properly so that future generations get to enjoy the same places that made me fall in love with the sea. It’s been amazing to chat with so many inspiring individuals and learn about tons of new projects that deal with kelp over the past 6 months, exciting to see the kelp forest get the recognition it deserves! 04 Jun 2023

I’ve been kicking around an idea for a bit and finally decided to jump in, @alexwarham and I are launching a studio focused on end to end immersive wildlife productions, @submersastudios, with a particular focus on the underwater world. What excites me most about immersive media is something I hear again and again when an audience partakes in a well-done experience: it feels like I’m really there. That reaction is different from anything traditional media can offer. The underwater world is hard to reach, full of physical and economic barriers. Immersive storytelling gives me a chance to share that world with people in a completely new way, and to tell stories using tools I haven’t had before. It’s also a chance to build excitement about a place many people will never get to visit. I’ve been working around the edges of the immersive space for about 8 years now but we finally have the tools to start pushing the boundaries underwater. Submersa Studios will work across headset, dome, IMAX, location based entertainment, installations, etc. Right now we’re deep into a headset project I’m excited about, here’s a sneak peek from our most recent shoot with @erick.higuera. We’ll be working on some dome and IMAX projects as well this year. Follow along for behind the scenes updates, and reach out if you want to talk immersive. I remember watching Jaws as a kid and being so terrified of sharks that I wouldn’t even go near a pool. Fast forward to last fall and I found myself holding onto the side of a shark fishing boat in the middle of the night, cruising through waters known for having a serious shark population, trying to film hammerheads. My younger self never would have pictured this! The Baja Peninsula is full of incredible animals and even more incredible people. We spent our days working alongside scientists and conservationists dedicated to protecting these shark species, and this episode is chock-full of what felt like once-in-a-lifetime encounters. It’s amazing to see some of those populations rebounding, if we manage how we interact with the ocean a bit better, we can see healthy seas. Spent the last couple weeks playing with the new Gates Cine Immersive Housing, it’s been incredible to see this come to life! I’ve loved the immersive space in general and especially what it can do to get people excited about the ocean. When done well, it’s the closest you’re going to get without actually diving in and I think that’s a very different feeling to your traditional media. Last week, we had the honor to dive in the neutral buoyancy lab with the astronaut candidates in Houston, an unforgettable experience and thanks so much to @gates.underwater, @apple, and @nasa for putting it all together!
