Anfang 2025 wurde der Istanbuler Bürgermeister Ekrem İmamoğlu unrechtmäßig inhaftiert. Die Staatsanwaltschaft fordert über 2.000 Jahre Haft, eine Zahl, die für sich spricht und jeden Anschein von rechtsstaatlichem Handeln zerstört. Ekrem İmamoğlus Verteidigungsschrift sollte nun als Buch erscheinen: „Millet Şahidimdir“ („Die Nation ist mein Zeuge“). Dann stoppte die Polizei den Druck. Alle gedruckten Exemplare wurden beschlagnahmt. In der Türkei dürfen Vertrieb und Verkauf nicht stattfinden. Doch wir sind deine Zeugen, Ekrem. Auf der Webseite des Vorwärts Verlags steht das Buch als Download auf türkischer Sprache zur Verfügung.

2025’in başında İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Ekrem İmamoğlu hukuka aykırı biçimde tutuklandı. Savcılık, İmamoğlu için 2.000 yılı aşkın hapis cezası istiyor. Bu sayı tek başına çok şey anlatıyor ve hukuk devleti ilkelerine uyulduğu izlenimini tamamen ortadan kaldırıyor. Ekrem İmamoğlu’nun savunma metni, “Millet Şahidimdir” adıyla kitap olarak yayımlanacaktı. Ancak polis kitabın basımını durdurdu. Basılan tüm nüshalara el konuldu. Kitabın Türkiye’de dağıtılması ve satılması yasak. Ama senin şahitlerin biziz, Ekrem İmamoğlu. Kitabın Türkçe metni Vorwärts Yayınevi’nin internet sitesinden indirilebiliyor.

I was nominated as the presidential candidate by the votes of 15.5 million citizens. First they tried to stop me from making my defence in court. Then they banned my book titled “The Nation Is My Witness”, containing my defence.
But they could not stand in the way of the truth.
Now we are sharing both my banned book and the full text of my defence in the IMM case with our nation and with the whole world, so that they can make their own judgment.
Sooner or later, justice will prevail!

Ekrem İmamoğlu’s book containing his defence against the charges brought against him, was seized before it even left the printing press. Yesterday, it was finally made available online.
Democratically elected Mayor of Istanbul and chosen by 15.5 million citizens as their presidential candidate, İmamoğlu represents everything Erdoğan fears: democracy, freedom and courage.
We will continue to keep Europe’s eyes firmly on Türkiye. And we will never abandon those fighting for freedom and democracy across the country.

Think about it. A criminal indictment against a mayor, about bribery, tenders and permits.
This indictment ends with a referral to the Court of Cassation calling for the closure of the party that founded this Republic.

As I stated in my defence, Being the state is one thing, being in power is another. Power is temporary, the state is permanent. Governments are voted in and voted out. The state, however, must treat every citizen equally, no matter who is in power.
When a party declares itself the state, the fundamental balance of the Republic collapses. Criticism of that party is treated as an attack on the state. Its rivals are immediately branded enemies of the state. Its interests are presented as the interests of the state.
But the Republic has already settled who the state belongs to! The state belongs to the nation!

Questa mattina la polizia ha fatto irruzione nella sede di Halk TV a Istanbul, interrompendo le trasmissioni e prendendo il controllo dell’emittente. Undici persone sono state fermate e sono stati emessi 17 mandati di arresto.
Presenterò domani un'interrogazione per chiedere misure concrete da parte dell'UE verso le istituzioni governative turche, fino a quando queste violazioni non saranno interrotte.
E ho un messaggio per il popolo turco: la libertà per cui vi state battendo è anche la nostra lotta, non siete soli. Forza!

This morning, the police raided the Halk TV headquarters in Istanbul, interrupting broadcasts and taking control of the station.
Eleven people have been detained, and 17 arrest warrants have been issued.
Tomorrow, I will submit a parliamentary question to request concrete measures from the EU against Turkish government institutions, until these violations cease.
And I have a message for the Turkish people: the freedom you are fighting for is also our struggle, you are not alone. Stay strong!

“Does my vote still count?”
From prison in Silivri, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu sent a letter to our Democracy at its Roots gathering in Athens.
His words were read on stage by Baran Güneş.
The people of Istanbul made their choice three times. Today, the mayor they elected is in prison.
His message goes beyond his own case: democracy means respecting the voters’ choice, the right to a fair trial and the rule of law, everywhere.
As he writes:
“The principles of democracy and the rule of law should not change from one country to another.”
From Silivri to Athens, a reminder of what is at stake when the will of voters is no longer respected.

“Benim oyum hâlâ geçerli mi?”
İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Ekrem İmamoğlu, Silivri Cezaevi’nden Atina’daki Democracy at its Roots buluşmamıza bir mektup gönderdi.
Mektubunu sahnede Baran Güneş okudu.
İstanbul halkı tercihini üç kez yaptı. Bugün, seçtikleri belediye başkanı cezaevinde.
İmamoğlu’nun mesajı yalnızca kendi davasıyla ilgili değil: Demokrasi; seçmenin iradesine, adil yargılanma hakkına ve hukukun üstünlüğüne her yerde saygı gösterilmesini gerektirir.
İmamoğlu’nun sözleriyle:

Silivri’den Atina’ya uzanan bu mesaj, seçmen iradesine saygının demokrasinin temel şartlarından biri olduğunu hatırlatıyor.

Tutto andrà bene. Ma la situazione democratica e politica in Turchia è sempre peggio. La speranza ha bisogno del nostro coraggio. Libertà per Ekrem İmamoğlu e per chi è in carcere per le proprie idee. L’Europa faccia sentire la sua voce perchè la democrazia non è merce di scambio.

As progressive, socialist and social democratic local and regional leaders gathered at our #DemocracyAtItsRoots event in Athens to discuss how we confront the crises facing Europe today, we received a message from Ekrem İmamoğlu, a democratically elected mayor, writing to us from behind bars.
His words are a powerful reminder of what is at stake: when voters’ choices are ignored, elected leaders are imprisoned or removed from office, and the rule of law is undermined, democracy itself is under pressure.
But his message is also one of resolve. Democracy belongs to the people. And defending it is a shared responsibility across borders.

I was elected Mayor of Istanbul three times. When I became the leading democratic challenger to the government, my university diploma, a prerequisite for running for presidency, was annulled. I was arrested and placed in pre-trial detention.
Since then, they have tried repeatedly to silence me.
My voice, my image and even photographs of me have been restricted. My social media accounts have been blocked time and again.
Then they tried to silence me inside the courtroom itself. I was prevented from presenting my defence and even from questioning other defendants.
Now they are trying to silence that defence outside the courtroom as well.
My forthcoming book, Millet Şahidimdir — The Nation Is My Witness — contains much of the defence I was not allowed to deliver freely before the court. On 27 August, before the book could even be released, an Istanbul court ordered all printed and forthcoming copies to be seized and banned its distribution and sale.
Police were sent to printing houses and copies were confiscated.
Think about what this means, first they prevent a political prisoner from presenting his defence in court; then they prohibit the public from reading that defence.
This is not justice. It is censorship backed by judicial power.
But I will not be intimidated.
I will not be silenced.
I will not surrender.
Millions will read this book. My defence will be heard. The truth will reach the public including those who are trying so desperately to suppress it.
You can confiscate a book. You cannot confiscate the truth.
