You’ve probably walked through the Egyptian Spice Bazaar without noticing what’s above your head. 🕌 Hidden above the shops at Istanbul’s historic Egyptian Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı) is a fascinating piece of Ottoman history: the Wooden Azan Pavilion (Ahşap Ezan Köşkü), located at Dua Meydanı. Dating back to the bazaar’s Ottoman history (1597–1664), this small wooden balcony was used for the call to prayer. But it had another important role: every morning, merchants gathered at this very spot to pray together before opening their shops and starting their working day. The Egyptian Bazaar is actually made up of two interconnected bazaars, and this pavilion stands at the meeting point of their longer and shorter sections. Next time you visit Mısır Çarşısı, look UP! History is hiding right above the shops.
