The historic Italian Terraces at Crystal Palace Park have been removed from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
An extensive landscape of ornamental gardens and fountains was once found at the Italian Terraces, which led up to the Crystal Palace itself. The Palace was destroyed by fire in 1936, but the terraces have now been carefully restored, which has led to their removal from the Heritage at Risk Register.
Conservation work included removing invasive vegetation and reinstating missing sections of the Upper and Lower Terrace walls. More than 1,600 pieces of Bath stone and 2,600 pieces of cast stone were used. Four statues, Psyche, Standing Lady, Turkey and Dante, have also been repaired. New meadow planting celebrates Victorian horticultural innovation and supports biodiversity. Improved drainage protects the 170-year-old walls, while a new ramp and accessible path create a step-free route between the Lower and Upper Terraces.
Today, the Terraces are once again a key visitor destination, hosting major summer music events and welcoming visitors to experience their renewed scale and spectacle.
The regeneration is delivered by the London Borough of Bromley and Crystal Palace Park Trust, with design led by HTA Design and works carried out by Maylim, SSH Conservation, Donald Insall Associates and Alan Baxter. Historic England’s expert advice helped inform the restoration.

Sutton Estate wins Retrofit of the Year at the Building Awards 2026 🏆
HTA Design’s retrofit of the Sutton Estate has transformed four 1913 housing blocks into 81 accessible, energy efficient homes, while preserving the estate’s historic character.
Instead of demolishing and rebuilding, the project reconfigured outdated studios, retained load bearing walls and repaired original brickwork using salvaged materials. Internal wood fibre insulation reduces heat loss by 57%, while 27 ground source heat pump boreholes provide fossil fuel free heating and help cut carbon emissions by 70%.
The judges called it “a model example” of estate regeneration and “an exemplar for other UK schemes.”
The Queen Elizabeth II Garden in Regent’s Park was Highly commended for the Environmental Impact Award.

Planning approval granted for Waterbeach in Cambridge!
Designed by @afk_studios, with landscape design by HTA Design for Greystar, Waterbeach will deliver 387 new lakeside homes. Set within @urbanandcivic's wider masterplan, the scheme brings together four mid rise residential buildings overlooking Waterbeach Lake.
The boardwalk and plaza will draw residents and visitors to waterfront cafés and shops, while offering places to gather and enjoy the lakeside setting. Along the gently sloping, fully accessible promenade, reed fringed decks provide quiet spots to pause. The plaza transitions from an intimate, residential scale space to a generous civic setting, with an amphitheatre extending towards the water for community events.
The landscape design will reinforce the existing green and blue infrastructure networks by connecting fragmented habitats along ecological and community corridors. Strategies include increasing canopy cover, integrating sustainable drainage systems and enhancing habitats along the lakefront. Biodiversity will be supported by diversifying habitats and expanding wetland areas. New reedbeds will be created along the lakefront, particularly on the eastern side, to connect existing waterbodies. SuDS will be integrated throughout the neighbourhood to collect, attenuate and clean surface water runoff before it is discharged into the lake.
Huge congratulation to the whole design team:

The UK’s largest council housing development, Kidbrooke Park Road is now complete!
Designed by HTA and delivered by Durkan for Royal Borough of Greenwich as part of the Greenwich Builds programme, the scheme provides 452 homes for social rent, alongside biodiverse green space, and community facilities, transforming a disused site into a new, civic-led neighbourhood.
Delivered in just six years from planning submission to completion, Kidbrooke Park Road demonstrates what can be achieved when local authorities take an ambitious approach to housing delivery and are supported by a shared vision between client, design team and contractor. We hope it serves as a benchmark for how future generations of affordable housing can be delivered across London and the UK.

HTA is known for many things: designing great homes and more sustainable places to live; shaping biodiverse landscapes; building strong relationships with communities…and sometimes, throwing an excellent party.
Last week we were joined by 300 of our clients and collaborators to celebrate the end of summer with a party in our Hackney Wick studio.
Secret cocktail bars, a rum club, and a dance hall spanned our warehouse space with music from Orchestra Mambo International and authentic arepas and empanadas by Peter’s Panas.
In homage to many years of hosting, we thought it was only right to use the night to launch our new book The LuncHTAbles: Second Course. Created as an update to our much loved first edition recipe book, The LuncHTAbles reflects HTA’s culture of sharing good food and good ideas. Filled with recipes from our in-house chefs, colleagues, and the events team, it covers all our essentials for hosting and more..
Thank you to everyone who came along to dance the night away with us.

“With a good home, everything is possible. Without one, it feels like nothing is.” Andy Burnham
Andy Burnham’s words capture why delivering good quality affordable housing matters. A home is the foundation for health, stability, and opportunity, but it must also be part of a well designed, sustainable place to live.
The recent visit to Kidbrooke Park Road by Sadiq Khan, Angela Rayner, Matthew Pennycook and Tom Copley marks an important step towards the scale of change that is needed.
London has secured a record £11.7 billion in affordable housing funding over the next decade, the largest and longest term settlement the capital has ever received. With more than £6 billion already being allocated, this is a major vote of confidence in London’s ability to deliver thousands more social, affordable and council homes.
This investment can build on the progress already being made across the capital, while giving councils and housing providers the certainty they need to bring forward ambitious new schemes.
At HTA, we work with councils, housing providers and communities to deliver great places to live. We work across all London Boroughs, most recently we completed Kidbrooke Park Road in Greenwich, the largest new build council housing scheme in the country.
With the funding secured, let’s get on and build the homes London needs.

The Sutton Estate wins Decarbonisation at scale at this year AJ Retrofit & Reuse Awards 2026 🏆
The judges described the project as ‘really impressive’ and ‘exemplary for other buildings’, highlighting the evident passion of the lead architect and the strength of its social mission. As a fully de-gassed development, they concluded that the Sutton Estate is not only a remarkable retrofit but a genuinely replicable model for the many similar historic and high-density estates that exist across London. ‘It also maps onto the title of the award category well.'
HTA led the renovation of Sutton Estate in Chelsea, transforming four residential blocks within this 100 year old social housing development for Clarion Housing Group. The project delivered sustainable, affordable homes while conserving the Edwardian Baroque character established in 1913.
A fabric first sustainability strategy was used to deliver the retrofit, with breathable internal wood fibre wall insulation preserving the performance of the original brickwork. New double glazed casement windows improved airtightness, daylight and ventilation. A ground source heat pump system, served by 28 boreholes drilled to depths of up to 180 metres, is connected to individual Shoebox heat pumps in each flat and supplies heating and hot water to every home.
Hardstanding, circulation roads and underused spaces were replaced with lush, interconnected green infrastructure linking the estate’s entrances, courtyards and communal garden, delivering a 40% biodiversity net gain.
Congratulations to the whole design team!

This National Inclusion Week, we want to highlight alternative routes into the built environment. @_shawn_adams_, Outreach Lead, spoke with Tannika Foote, our London Studio Assistant about her career journey with HTA.
Tannika joined HTA through the Hackney 100 Skills+ programme a flagship employment initiative designed to create career opportunities for adults over the age of 25. She initially joined the practice on a three-month contract, but her hard work, dedication, and positive contribution to the team meant that she was quickly offered a permanent role.
Outside of work, Tannika is pursuing an interior design course and credits the resources, encouragement and mentorship she has received at HTA as giving her the confidence to study and work towards becoming an interior designer.
Tannika believes inclusion is important in creating a positive workplace, something she has experienced first-hand during her time at HTA. For her, inclusion is about feeling that you belong and knowing that your contribution matters.
She believes companies should create environments where people feel included and heard, giving everyone the space to share their thoughts, experiences, and ideas. At HTA, we have inclusion groups where colleagues can discuss important issues, have open conversations and raise matters that are important to them. We also have social events, which give people the opportunity to connect outside their usual teams and celebrate our different communities.
You can read the full interview with Tannika on our website.
