Today is World Heart Day.
A day to pay attention to something that can be remarkably easy to miss.
High blood pressure doesnât always come with a warning. You can feel completely well and still not know that something has changed.
For Nina, that became personal.
One reading was high. The next was low. She was checking her blood pressure, but the individual numbers left her unsure of where she actually stood.
So she started looking at what was happening over days and weeks. Thatâs when the picture changed. Nina could see that her blood pressure had gone up.
âThat changed my life.â
Itâs why weâre sharing her story today.
Because World Heart Day isnât only about people already living with a diagnosis. Itâs a reminder for all of us not to wait until something feels wrong before we start paying attention.
This yearâs message is Donât Miss a Beat.
And Ninaâs story shows exactly why.

đď¸Today, on the @modernwellnesspodcast @sammiadhami is joined by Dr Josep SolĂ , Co-Founder and CTO of Aktiia, the company behind the Hilo Band / @hilo.global hilo.global to discuss how theyâre revolutionising blood pressure monitoring and helping to save lives.
10 million people die every year from hypertension, yet around half of those with high blood pressure donât know they have it. Itâs called the silent killer for a reason.
Built on more than 20 years of research, Hilo is the first and only clinically accurate, continuous and cuffless blood pressure measurement solution in the consumer space, taking up to 800 readings a month.
Already used by more than 250,000 people, their data shows something particularly interesting: the more users engage with the Hilo app and their data, the greater the reduction they see in their blood pressure.
We dive into the story behind the technology, what the data is showing, and how continuous monitoring could change the way we tackle one of the worldâs biggest silent health problems.

Sleep. Training. Recovery.
Your wearable probably tells you about all three.
Blood pressure? Thatâs where Hilo is different. đ
At our New York event, guests experienced Hilo Core in action:
â 25+ readings across the day
â Referenced against the Hilo Cuff
â Patterns and changes over time
â Band, cuff and app working together
More context than a single reading.
We give you a clearer way to understand your blood pressure.

We know blood pressure probably isnât what youâre thinking about over your morning coffee. âď¸
And we get it. Life is busy, and keeping an eye on your health isnât always top of the list.
But blood pressure changes throughout the day and night. One reading can tell you whatâs happening in that moment, but not how things change over time.
Thatâs why we created Hilo.
We want to make it easier to understand your blood pressure as you go about your everyday life, without having to think about checking it all the time. đ

When was the last time you checked your blood pressure?
And more importantly, what did you learn from it?
In a six-month analysis of Hilo users, people who engaged more frequently with the app also tended to see greater reductions in blood pressure.
That doesnât mean checking the app caused those changes, but it does highlight an interesting relationship worth understanding.
In this clip from the @modernwellnesspodcast, our Co-Founder and CTO, Josep SolĂ , talks about what weâre learning from real-world blood pressure data. đď¸

For Sally, understanding her blood pressure has become a much bigger part of understanding her health.
She started using Hilo in February 2025 and says the app has helped her understand what affects her blood pressure, feel more in control, and have something useful to share with her GP at her annual check-up.
In her own words:
âThe app has been a huge help in monitoring and understanding what affects my blood pressure. I feel much more in control of a key part of my health, and I show my GP the readings at my annual check-up, which they also find useful.â
Real experiences like Sallyâs are exactly why better visibility matters. đ

For Abdalla, the biggest change wasnât just seeing his blood pressure. It was knowing what to do with the information.
After discovering he had high blood pressure, his GP suggested Hilo so they could see readings outside the clinical setting.
That data became something Abdalla could actually use. He changed parts of his lifestyle, watched his readings come down over time, and shared them with his doctor.
âBecause of the data, I feel more empowered to make changes to my lifestyle.â
A pretty powerful shift. đ

Nicola thought she was doing all the right things.
She eats well, exercises, and has spent 31 years working for the NHS. But after being diagnosed with white coat hypertension, she still wanted a clearer sense of what her blood pressure was doing outside the clinic.
Thatâs what she found useful about Hilo. đ
Seeing her blood pressure across the day helped her notice something she hadnât expected: it could rise while she was asleep.
That gave her more context and something concrete to discuss with her doctor when thinking about the next steps.
For Nicola, it wasnât about checking more. It was about understanding more.

Why do we exist?
For our CEO Stefan Petzinger, it comes back to something pretty simple: blood pressure matters, but most of us still donât really know what ours is doing day to day.
We built Hilo to make that easier to understand and to make blood pressure feel like a more normal part of looking after your health.

Every time Cameron checked his blood pressure, he knew he was nervous.
And that made the whole experience harder.
After finding out he had high blood pressure, Cameron started checking it at home. But the more worried he became about the result, the more stressful each measurement felt.
So he started looking for another way to understand what his blood pressure was doing
With Hilo, he could see his blood pressure information as he went about everyday life, without waiting for a measurement to be taken and bring it up in conversations with his doctor.
As Cameron puts it: âIt really empowered me.â
For him, understanding his blood pressure became less about worrying over every number and more about feeling informed enough to take charge of his health. đ

There is no ânormal blood pressure for your age.â
Age can affect risk, but it does not explain everything.
Family history, health conditions, sleep, stress, activity, medication, and even where a measurement is taken can all influence the result.
That is why blood pressure should be understood on a personal level, not reduced to a generic age chart online.
Know your numbers. Look beyond one result. Ask a healthcare professional what they mean for you.

For Greg, understanding his blood pressure changed more than the numbers.
After a major health event changed the way he thought about his cardiovascular health, Greg started looking at his body differently.
Exercise, recovery, stress, the way he felt day to day. Things he had previously taken for granted suddenly carried more questions. And blood pressure became one of them.
And then we came into the picture.
With Hilo, Greg finally had a way to see more of what was happening across those everyday moments, rather than relying only on how he felt.
Over time, that visibility changed the way he engaged with his health. He had more context. More to bring into conversations with his doctor.
And, perhaps most importantly, less uncertainty.
Not simply having more blood pressure data, but feeling more informed and more confident in how he responds to it.
That is the kind of impact we want Hilo to have.
Helping people understand their blood pressure in the context of real life, and giving them something meaningful to act on.
