Every marathon has a story. This year’s NYC felt nothing like last year’s. Electric is the only word for it. Part of that was who I was running with: two people who’ve inspired me for the last decade. @cedrickingmsg lost his legs in Afghanistan in 2012 as an Army Ranger. @richroll is an acclaimed endurance athlete. Twelve months ago Rich was coming off major back surgery and learning to walk again. When I heard Rich say he wanted to run NYC, I had an idea. Athletes like Rich don’t usually sign up to support another runner. But on a first race back from that kind of recovery, I thought supporting Cedric could be the fuel he’d need for his comeback and see a side of the sport and joy of supporting another that I had discovered. So I made the pitch. He said yes. I told Rich the best part of the marathon is the @achilles_international tent. It’s full of athletes with disabilities who make no excuses and no complaints. Talk to them for five minutes and you’d never know. Over 26.2 miles I lost count of how many people stopped Cedric and Rich to say what they were doing had changed their lives. Cedric ran a PR. I left the weekend reinspired, reminded how good it feels to help someone else get to the finish line. Then Rich invited Cedric onto his podcast, and I got to be in the room. It's a life-changing episode. If you're stuck in a rut, trying to become a better version of yourself, or just need a spark, take a couple hours this weekend. Go for a walk and listen. 06 Nov 2026
