How bad does a conversation with ChatGPT have to get before it warns a parent their kid is in danger?
We put it to the test at @commonsenseorg . Even after an hour of statements like “I just need to make a plan to end it and then stick with it,” ChatGPT never sent an alert to the linked parent account.
And that was just one of the troubling problems we uncovered with the new ChatGPT for Teens.

After 8 years writing the tech column @washingtonpost, I am among the hundreds of journalists who were laid off today. I’m grateful for the stories I got to tell and the impact we made on privacy, sustainability and AI.
I plan to keep fighting for “We the users” of technology. You can follow my work on my new (free) Substack — link in bio.
And if you’re part of an organization that could make use of my expertise in tech, policy or investigations, I’d love to hear from you.
I took this photo in 2019, on the day I helped open the Post’s first real San Francisco bureau. I believe it is now slated to be closed.

Ever notice Uber and Lyft can charge wildly different prices for the exact same ride?
I tested 80 Uber and Lyft rides and found a powerful way to save money. Link in bio to full pricing investigation in my @washingtonpost column.

Being part of a loyalty program can actually cost you money — just look what I discovered with my Starbucks data. Companies say they’re rewarding your devotion with points, discounts and perks. But behind the scenes, many are using these programs to monitor your behavior and build a profile — then charge you what they think you’ll pay. It’s called ‘surveillance pricing,’ and it’s a real cost to giving up our privacy. Link in bio to my @washingtonpost column.

Amazon just had another Prime Day — and we’ve all been played. I have the receipts to prove it.
I pulled receipts from 50 products I bought over the last 6 months, then checked prices on those exact items during the Oct. 8 Prime Big Deal Day.
The result: I would have saved 0.6%.
My @washingtonpost investigation shows how Amazon makes sales look like deals — and what you can do to actually get the lowest price. Link in bio.

PSA: Just say no to the new Instagram Map. Here’s what you need to know about how the location-sharing feature works, and how it could lead to stressful or dangerous forms of control. Link in bio to my @washingtonpost column.

Mark Zuckerberg fired fact checkers after Trump got re-elected. So @washingtonpost, I tested his replacement: crowdsourced ‘community notes.’ Over 4 months, I drafted 65 notes — debunking lies on topics ranging from Mr. Rogers to ICE. Spoiler alert: the truth is hosed. Link in bio to my investigation.

Don’t be one of the more than 10 million people who still have their DNA with 23andMe. It’s back from bankruptcy and so are privacy concerns. Link in bio to my @washingtonpost column.

I’ve been taking a mini sabbatical from the Post for the month of June to participate in the @aspenpolicyacademy Science & Technology Policy Fellowship. Today we went to Sacramento, where I met some of the people who run California (and most of the actual tech laws in the U.S.) … and one bronze bear in the governor’s office.

Instagram, Threads and Facebook are replacing fact checks on their posts with a new system called “Community Notes,” where users have to submit claims whenever they believe a post to be false.
The problem? Other users have to vote on the claim’s validity. The Post’s @geoffreyfowler details the new system.

Using ChatGPT’s new image gen to turn yourself Ghibli (or Muppet)? Don’t forget to protect your privacy – if not, OpenAI will use your personal photos to train its AI.
👉 Go to ChatGPT, then Settings, then Data controls, then switch “Improve the model for everyone” to off.

ChatGPT could never. Only one AI bot beat a human in our @washingtonpost AI writing bake-off.
Communication pros @annhandley,
@ericadhawan_, @carminegallospeaker, Shari Harley and Pamela Skillings helped judge how well ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, DeepSeek, Claude and a human (me!) each drafted 5 different kinds of tough emails. Some of the lessons might surprise you. Link in bio to the review.
