OUT TODAY ~~ The Sirens by Geologist and Kyle Simon, an immersive exploration of the night sky’s sonic contours, recorded in California’s high desert at Simon’s Farrington Observatory during the 2024 Hunter’s Moon. Available now on cassette and digital formats 🌌
The Sirens is a longform composition for synthesizer and moonlight, a sonic representation of that universal human experience of letting the majesty of the night sky overwhelm the senses. The light from the stars and moon, captured in the lens of Farrington’s telescope, becomes audible through a bespoke set up of photodiodes and optical sensors that are then routed through an analog amplifier and set to modulate the pitch, filter, and other elements of Geologist’s synthesizer. Electronics crackle and convulse, coalescing into dense dissonance before widening out into an open octave. Just as the moon orbits the Earth and the stars shift as the planet rotates, so each sonic element appears in flux, interrelationships slowly forming and falling away. The piece exists in a lineage that extends beyond music: of sea captains navigating by looking skyward, of astrophysicists studying the formation of the Milky Way, of the modern myths of werewolves, of the stories embedded in constellations.
Outside Time will present a special listening event for The Sirens at the Montgomery College Planetarium on November 19. The planetarium’s dome will be filled with the sky above Joshua Tree from the night of the album’s recording, the moon moving in real time across the sky we listen to the album in full. The event is free and open to the public.
We’ve also added a t-shirt featuring an illustration made by Simon of the Sirens concept, depicting both artists as they transform the light of the moon into aural expanse. We will be collecting pre-orders for two weeks before printing, and only very a limited number of shirts will remain after we determine quantities. Order via the album’s Bandcamp page, where we’ve also added a limited second pressing of the cassette.

Hey all! Brian and Dave here writing to tell you about our new duo Croz Boyce. Been working on this one a long time and excited for you all to finally hear it. After we did the “Brown Thrasher” track for The Birdsong Project compilation in 2021, we thought there was more in that vein to explore together. Maybe an entire record. The Meeting of The Waters EP started the trip a little earlier without us being aware, and the more we went down the stream to Brown Thrasher, the more distant the voice. When firmly in the current, the more interested we got in seeing where we’d end up if the voice disappeared altogether. We started the first track “Hanging Out With A Blueberry Pop” in January 2023 in our personal studios and returned to the songs every few months when opportunity arose in between our other projects. By October 2025 after a week of mixing by the stream at Out There Studios in western NC, and a few days of finish line polish with brother Jmin in Baltimore, it felt done and ready to share. And speaking of the freshwater, take some time today to immerse yourself in the springs with a video for “Hanging Out…” by Joseph Ricketts. As always thanks for listening - CB

Means a lot to me to say this is out in the world. Get to it if you want, when you can and when it feels right.
People seem to like the title and how it makes them think about their youth. It does for me too and that is certainly one aspect. It has a lot of meanings for me, but mostly, it was something I said every day for a long time, and then I didn’t, and I’ve been healthier and felt better ever since (though they still smell so good.) There were other things I said every day that made me feel unhealthy, one of which was I don’t think I have a proper solo album in me. Once I wrote this material and played it live for the first time, I felt that wasn’t true anymore and I wanted to stop saying it. To stop saying “can I get a pack of camel lights?”, I had to quit smoking. And to stop saying I couldn’t turn this music into a solo album, I had to do it. Wasn’t sure if I could, so no coincidence it’s titled as a question. Plus I never said “gimme a pack of camel lights” anyway. I can’t pull off that vibe, nor do I want to. Honestly, I probably always said “please,” but that’s not as cool of a title.
Endless thanks to everyone who helped me make it @adam.mcdaniel.dos @_dropofsun_ @aaaveytttare @alligayytor @aliannaclicmob @em_garau @shanejusticemccord @frogohmine @liiiiiioooooooonnnnnn bonkers @heba_kadry @iz_barber @nastanovich67 @mojackpod @dragcityrecords

Today at 4pm ET/1pm PT @nts_radio will be broadcasting The Sirens by Geologist and Kyle Simon in its entirety for the first time. Tune into The O’Brien System on 2 to hear a selection of songs by Geologist that played at the Farrington Observatory before the live performance documented on the recording, followed by the full stream of the album.
The Sirens is a sonic exploration of the night sky’s mystical and scientific significance that extends across cultures. Over a decade ago, Simon began immersing himself in literature on humanity’s sonic relationship to the celestial realm, including Homer’s Odyssey, Plato’s “Spindle of Necessity,” Kepler’s Harmonices Mundi, and the field of astroseismology. He fitted homemade telescopes with photodiodes and optical sensors to make the images audible, finding latent patterns in the noisy sonic signals he began receiving from the stars. With Geologist, the process expanded as the signal was routed through an analog amplifier and set to modulate the pitch, filter, and other elements of his synthesizer. The recording premiering today is the culmination of these many years of research, experimentation, and musical collaboration. It is the sound of two lifelong friends, driven by curiosity and ingenuity, looking up in wonder.
We encourage you to tune in and listen live, as the archive of this particular episode will be limited as the album is released widely on October 16 on Outside Time.
Due to exceptionally high demand, we have a limited repress of the cassette available on Bandcamp. Links to pre-order and such are in the bio zone.
