It was testament to the magic and surreal wonder that went into that unbelievably fast week I was fortunate to spend with you and Daniel. Your hospitality was unforgettable (“jet lag face mask” in my bathroom, books at the bedside table, all the cleaning you did...) but nothing holds a CANDLE to the sheer bounty and beauty of warm #MEMORIES: meeting you at the airport, driving home that first night, shopping in the market, creating wedding favors, cooking together, laughing, watching movies, reading poetry, walking Nana, and of course celebrating your #wedding and #marriage to your one true love! What an emotional, beautiful, inspiring, life-affirming affair that was 🤧😭😍 My chest swells when I think of helping you get ready, or the hugs you and Daniel gave me that day, or dancing with you to Wagon Wheel, or setting up the venue... all of it was SO much #fun 🥳

The only thing I missed was @stories.chipotlequeen and @aishaayeshamusic 🤧 Oh, yea, and I’m maybe bummed I just barely missed the bouquet 😂 But you telling me you wished I caught it reflected how special you treated me the whole week I was there. It was nothing short of a gift to be there with you. I fell in love with your family, your home, Denmark, and of course even more with your beautiful soul. I’m so blessed to have you in my life and can’t wait to receive you in the States one of these days! 😭

I love nose grabs 🙈😂 I drew the base sketch back when I was 15, never colored it... and recycled it now 8 years later! 😳 My heart melted, like, a thousand times while I brought to life Matthew and young Marcus Moses from my novel. He underwent an open adoption with the help of teen mom Nicole, if you remember from Chapter 131. Guys, I grinned like a fool at this art as I was creating it... it was so darn tender and cuuuuute!!! 🤧🙈♥️

With regard to the song choices, I love the riff of ‘Chances’ by Five For Fighting. After it was used in ‘The Blind Side’, I’ve never seen it as anything else as about family. ‘Never Grow Up’ is a timeless, if not tired, lullaby of sorts. My favorite though has to be Toby Mac’s ‘Made To Love’ — this is a worship song but if you pretend it’s about adoption your heart just might crack 😭🙈🤧 actually teary eyed haha

A good father who’s there for you is a real blessing to cherish ✨ I’m so lucky to have a dad who supports so much of what I do and cares a ton. Even if I don’t agree with him on more than a few things, his heart is in the right place 🙈#happyfathersday to all you dads (and uncles) out there who love your kiddos and are heroes and adventurers and piggyback-givers and shoulders and storytellers for your little ones — you deserve to be celebrated.

SWIPE for process 🚩 I poured my heart into this art of Shelley from @drippingmascara, pictured here with her sweet baby Mari, adopted from Honduras and clearly thriving after her heart surgery 😍 I haven’t been prouder of a piece in a long time. One day, it will hopefully be my reality.

Motherhood is a touchy topic for me. I remember being 11 sitting on the doctor’s table being told I wouldn’t be able to be a mother unless I adopted. My sweet pediatrician was so encouraging and tried to let my brain—advanced in education but still a little girl’s—process this news. I remember my mom breaking out in sobs while I frowned and thought of God’ miracles. For 3 years, I searched for possibilities/loopholes that I could still be pregnant one day. At 14, my mom finally gave me my health file. I vividly remember reading it in my parents’ walk-in closet, tears trickling down my face as the truth sank in. Those tears are a mirror of the ones I bear right now, almost 10 years later but overlooking the city in my balcony.

In my childhood fancy, I didn’t know the long road ahead. I had 3 dreams I foolishly wrote down when I was 8: be a mother, marry Mathew, and be a doctor. As the years churned, I have had to let some dreams go. First I found out I would have to forsake being pregnant. I could still adopt, but that was still a grief I had to process. Then I lost Matthew because of this. Lately, I have had to consider adopting as a single woman. We’ll see 🙈 I discuss this in my upcoming poetry book ‘yo-yos and echoes’. When the🤰🏻emoji came, I’ll confess I did tear up. I don’t know if I’ll even ever have the chance to experience this emoji🤱🏻but what I do know is I will experience this👩👧👦or👨👩👧👦—one way or another.

I take this day to cherish not only the amazing woman who birthed me, but also my surrogate mother (lab mom) and realize some mothers are born in hearts as they are in wombs. This is the first ever canvas I painted with acrylics at a wonderful session organized by a classmate from medical school, and I’m really pleased with the outcome 👁🌳 I only went in knowing I wanted to draw and eye and a tree.

I chose these two entities since I love drawing eyes and dripping mascara (and it wouldn’t be a total mess). As for the tree, wanted to try some brush techniques I picked up on YouTube right before the session. The concept happened quite by accident and then I grew to love it and find a sort of inner meaning that just came out of a vessel meant to find it... just like the actual writing of my story.

You don’t quite know how much of an accident writing that story was, just like this art. And it’s forever changed my life. Writing about the stuff that hurts, especially, between the stuff that makes me and others laugh and enjoy what life has to offer — that is the magic of what I experienced on @episode. This was my first Episode edit and it was so much fun, relaxing, and quite easy compared to drawing from scratch. It’s crazy to me that INK still doesn’t have freckles and I had to draw them in (see slide 2) 🙈 If you look at my cover art for Wasted Roses, you’ll see that Rose has always had freckles and that @meilasummers was obsessed with them 😂

My sweet friend @writer.lb is so wise, so strong, so beautiful, and so witty — just like her baby Leona in #instantprincess 👑 I never expected that this story would NOT get featured after witnessing the demand it commanded in the community. I don’t understand how it’s not featured, just like I have never understood how @writer.lb 1st story could be so incredibly polished. Like many fellow community members, I greatly looked forward to seeing greatness in banners and hold a permanent place on the app in the form of LB’s powerful storytelling, unparalleled diversity, and meticulous directing. Now add trendy, upscale fashion to the list after the screenshots I’ve seen and the reading I will embark — seriously, this dress with its golden roses was SO much fun to draw.
😪😒 I won’t hound @episode... that helps no one, much less our dear LB, but I just have to say that this is a great loss for the app. Broad generalizations below that I know will spark controversy but to hell with that 🙄 IMO, the app’s audience, cultivated now through years of habit, craves and consumes only one type of story featuring just two kinds of female MCs (a glamorized version of “you”, or the typical Eurocentric MC). This is going to cost quality, progress, and novelty. Unfortunately, what’s profitable on Episode has to contain preferences that constitute an exaggerated impulse that has been shown in science experiments years prior with dolls: little girls, even girls of color, will invariably choose dolls that are blond and white. Episode had its chance to change that — like some other apps in the market have done so well — and mold a sophisticated audience that would embrace Instant Princess for the beautiful, enthralling story it is. That’s all I have to say broadly on this issue.
LB, your tears broke my heart and made me wonder about the little dreamer who lived in a world she probably sometimes didn’t feel like she belonged to. Don’t abandon your gift, my friend. Instant Princess is featured in our hearts as an unforgettable story that reached great heights and inspired so many #ghimaliforever 👑✨ Don’t feel like you have to respond — you’re hounded with notifications.
