Derrick Gee doesn’t call himself a critic, he calls himself a “professional music fan.” In just two years, the Sydney-based creator has gone from sharing playlists to interviewing Lorde, Jamie xx, and St. Vincent in his home studio. This June, he took his love of deep cuts on a four-city European tour: part music talk show, part listening session. @gee_derrick, the Sydney-based serious music fan turned YouTuber, has made a career out of suggesting we consume things differently. Not that he’s interested in telling anyone what to listen to. “Like what you like. I don’t care what you like. This is what I like,” he says. A cruisy attitude for someone whose job, broadly speaking, is to influence other people’s taste.⁣ ⁣ After a decade in television production and stints in community radio, Gee found his audience posting a TikTok about his nerdy speakers. The video attracted hundreds of thousands of views. People wanted to know what he listened to them. ⁣ ⁣ Next he started doing interviews with musicians, with guests invited to bring records to his Sydney home and play whatever they fancy. His show, Solid Air, has included interviews with Lorde, Jamie xx and Fred Again. ⁣ ⁣ But Gee doesn’t consider himself a critic. Today @the.australian released their “Power Players” list for 2026, and put me one of the 10 most influential people in the Australian music industry??!?? Firstly, it’s an honour to even be considered for something such as this, because I don’t entirely feel a part of the “industry”. But secondly, it means a lot that someone like me, who effectively makes videos in my home, can make such an impact that may sit alongside some very important people in the music industry. I think outside of that, it was the young journalists who interviewed me that left the greatest impression on me. To understand what I do, deem it important and pitch me to their superiors alongside say, the owners of the biggest festival in the country. Bless! I take great pride in what I do. The North America Tour is done!!! And I would like to say a few things if I may: First and most importantly: I don’t know if she’ll see this but this tour wouldn’t have happened without my beautiful wife. Holding it down with our four year old, her job is way harder than mine and it’s so hard to be away from them. Thank you for everything my love. Everything. _ Two weeks, five shows, eight guest performers, two radio appearances, three DJ sets, one podcast record, thirteen meetings, one brand shoot - and each moment filled with pure joy. I met so many of you - on stage, after the show, in DMs, in meeting rooms, but the energy was consistent across all. Each encounter warm, each contribution significant. A one of a kind performance here. A cathartic story told in front of hundreds of strangers there. Over these two weeks I’ve been met with kind eyes, gentle smiles, warm embraces. Tears. Laughter. Community. And a hell of a lot of music. Music is so important to me. But not just for what it does for me, but what it does for us. Thank you to the artists who performed. Thank you to all of you for coming. Thank you for all those who took the time to meet me. Listen to more music. Share it with others. And listen to it loud.
