Assam’s floods are not caused by rainfall alone. Research, field observations, and the experiences of flood-affected communities point to a wider crisis involving erosion, sedimentation, deforestation, damaged wetlands, weak drainage, ageing embankments, and fragmented river management.
I made these images over a few years in Assam with the support of ActionAid, RVC, and local grassroots organisations working in flood-affected areas, particularly in Upper Assam. Their guidance helped me understand that flooding does not end when the water recedes.
Families are displaced repeatedly. Children struggle to continue school. Homes, roads, livestock, and belongings are lost. Agricultural land is often covered by silt, sand, stones, and debris carried by the water. In some areas, these deposits make cultivation more difficult and reduce the land’s ability to support the families who depend on it.
Researchers and water experts have also pointed to a larger institutional problem: the Brahmaputra is a connected river basin, but its management remains divided across administrative boundaries. A response focused only on embankments, relief camps, and compensation cannot address the deeper challenges of erosion, sediment movement, changing river channels, weak coordination, and climate-related risks.
The photographs in this series show people living through that reality—school-going children making their way through floodwater, families protecting what they can, older people facing repeated displacement, and communities whose relationship with land is changing every year.
I am grateful to ActionAid, RVC, and the local organisations and field workers who supported this project and helped me understand the issue beyond the frame.
When the media moves on, the flood does not. For thousands of people in Assam, it remains a recurring condition of life.

The talk of Gorkhaland happens in every household of Nepali-speaking Indians. In India and abroad. It happened in mine too.
But I had never experienced it firsthand.
In 2017, when the hills shut down for 104 days — one of the longest bandhs in independent India’s history — I came to Darjeeling as a journalist. I expected a movement. I found something more complicated.
The protests were everywhere. But there was no plan. No leader. I asked local leaders what the agenda was. Nobody had an answer. I asked the protesters who came out rain or sunshine. They didn’t have one either. Only one echo, everywhere: this is a legitimate demand, and India must answer it.
Their only Member of Parliament — S.S. Ahluwalia — never came.
When the 104 days ended and the hills opened again, people went back to their daily lives. But I couldn’t stop thinking about the families who had lost someone to this movement. Not just in 2017 — but in the eighties, when the agitation was at its bloodiest.
Those families didn’t go back to normal.
That’s when I decided this couldn’t be one story. It had to be a long one.
104 is an ongoing documentary that began in Darjeeling in 2017.
Today, for the first time, the same government sits in both Delhi and Kolkata. The hills are watching closely. Because if not now — then the question becomes not just when, but whether.
