Before the world knew Muhammad Ali as “The Greatest,” there was Cassius Clay, a young man with big dreams, a fighting spirit, and a village of people who helped shape his path.
In Prime Video’s limited series ‘The Greatest,’ Jaalen Best, Omari Hardwick, Michael Ealy, Amin Joseph and Kai Parham bring the family, friendships, faith and rivalries that helped define Ali’s journey to life, telling a story that goes deeper than the legend.
For our latest digital cover, we’re spotlighting the knockout cast and revisiting the people and experiences behind one of the most recognizable legacies in history.

“One of the best things I left Morehouse with wasn’t on my transcript. It was Jostin.”
Jerek Brown graduated as valedictorian, but meeting Jostin Grimes through the Morehouse College Glee Club in 2013 gave him something no diploma could capture. A mutual friend introduced them, weekends together became a habit, and by 2015, they were a couple.
Morehouse Homecoming has been part of their relationship from the beginning. The tailgate is their tradition—even if Jerek occasionally has to find Jostin somewhere in a crowd of 47 new friends.
More than a decade after meeting on campus, they’re preparing to become husbands. As Jostin puts it, “Morehouse gave us both so much individually, but the fact that it also gave us each other? That one is hard to beat.”
Their story is the latest in our Love on the Yard series, celebrating Black love and the HBCU experiences that bring people together. Read more at ESSENCE.com

This is what we like to call boots/slingback on the ground journalism.
Oh, the praise is going to be HIGH this Sunday. Somebody make sure the mothers have room in the aisle!
Listening to these Matriarchs celebrate the election results reminds us that there is something sacred about Black women’s joy.
Hootin and Hollering at its finest.
P.S. Mother, we may need to borrow that hat!

A Black woman is leading Balenciaga, and her name is Martine Rose.
The British-Jamaican designer has been named Balenciaga’s new creative director, becoming the first woman to hold the position in its 109-year history. She officially begins November 16.
For Rose, who launched her namesake label in 2007 and previously consulted on Balenciaga’s menswear under Demna, this appointment brings years of influence into a position of power.
She joins Grace Wales Bonner, appointed to lead Hermès men’s ready-to-wear, and Rachel Scott, creative director of Proenza Schouler, in a small but consequential circle of Black women entrusted with shaping established fashion houses.
There is something beautiful about seeing Black women’s imagination given room, resources, and authority. The talent has been there. These appointments show what happens when the industry puts its trust and its investment behind it.
Congratulations Martine!

Want to get the job done? Hire Black women!
Keisha Lance Bottoms made history as the first Black woman elected governor in U.S. history. But that wasn’t the only Georgia news that deserved a headline. Joining her in statewide leadership is a cabinet of Black women: Tanya Miller, Penny Brown Reynolds, Nikki Porcher, Keisha Sean Waites, Katherine Juhan-Arnold, Lydia Powell, and Shelia Edwards.
Together, they will lead seven of Georgia’s eight executive offices and hold a seat on the Public Service Commission, helping shape decisions touching classrooms, livelihoods, voting access and household bills.
Let that sit with you.
These victories carry generations of organizing, doors knocked, rides to the polls and faith that refused to quit. We honor the women who laid the groundwork and those whose names never made a ballot but whose work helped move us forward.
Now, these eight women will help write Georgia’s next chapter. History made. A future to build. And work to do.

The script is only part of the story. The brotherhood goes much deeper.
With ‘The Greatest,’ the conversation moves beyond Muhammad Ali’s legacy to celebrate the beauty of Black manhood—the joy, the vulnerability, and the bonds that remind us we don’t have to navigate life alone.
In ESSENCE Uncovered, the cast reflects on bringing his formative years to life and what they love about being Black men. From the relationships that shape them to the freedom of being fully themselves, there’s something powerful about Black men making room for one another to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

An assorted box of chocolates!
These knockouts bring plenty of prowess to the screen, but we’re taking a moment to appreciate the gentlemen behind the story. Because handsome is as handsome does, and these men have the talent to match.
Fine Black men, fine talent and even finer storytelling.

There’s something special about having a village in your corner.
From Omari Hardwick and Dana Gourrier as Ali’s parents to Jaalen Best as the young Muhammad Ali, Kai Parham as his brother Rudy, Michael Ealy as Malcolm X and Amin Joseph as Sonny Liston, the cast of ‘The Greatest’ brings the people behind the legend to life.
Different roles, generations and perspectives, all part of a story about the people who help shape us.
And if we may add, this cast looks pretty damn good, too!

To the 94%,
Black women, this country doesn’t always deserve you, yet it continues to need you.
You are the backbone of America. The undeniable conscience of a system that depends on your candor, your wisdom, your wit and your spirit.
After 2024, we called for rest. We asked Black women to put down the weight of a country that has demanded far too much while giving far too little in return. Yet when the moment called, you answered. Not because you owed this country anything, but because your belief in a better tomorrow has always been greater than the obstacles standing in its way.
Once again, you reminded the world that Black women don’t just participate in history. They shape it.
Today, we hope you can finally exhale.
For the first time in a long time, the weight of the world feels a little lighter. Today feels like the embrace we needed in 2024. The hope and joy we remember from 2008. A reminder that even after the longest nights, morning still knows our names.
And to those elected, remember the hands that helped open those doors. Honor their labor. Hear their voices. Protect their interests. Don’t forget about home.
Black women, you’ve given this country your brilliance, your patience, your resilience, your prayers and your ballots. May this moment finally give something beautiful back to you.
To the 94%, job well done.

The Democrats may have taken the House and Senate, but the internet definitely won election night.
There was history being made on the ballot and comedy being made in the replies. The speed? The timing?
Before the results could finish rolling in, somebody had already found the perfect reaction meme. The commitment to finding the exact clip for the moment? Truly a public service.
We are so unserious.
Swipe through a few posts that had us laughing between the election updates and tell us which one got you rolling like the Blue Wave.
