Bitcoin celebrated its 18th birthday this week, as it has been 18 years since the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto published the Bitcoin White Paper. It’s been a wild ride for those who got on the BTC bandwagon early on.
Will you be getting on the Bitcoin train anytime soon or watching from a safe distance?

Happy Friday Equity Mates, these are your headlines for 6 November.
1. The US Democratic Party decisively took control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, which will, among other things, increase pressure on Trump to end the war in Iran. Oil prices fell 17% as an end to the Iran conflict looks more likely.
2. Data centre proposals were defeated in 40 of 41 elections were they where voted on, and investors fear Trump’s alignment with tech leaders will make AI a target for Democrats. Chipmakers and neocloud companies fell, headlined by Nvidia (down 3%), Samsung (down 8%), SK Hynix (down 10%) and CoreWeave (down 10%).
3. Australian property firm Goodman Group, which also builds data centres, acquired a 7.5% share of data centre firm NextDC, whose stock has been downtrodden following earnings downgrades due to data centre delays.
4. After two waves of cyberattacks hit supermarkets across Europe and caused millions of euros’ worth of food to spoil, three French blood banks also had their cold storage rooms attacked by hackers, highlighting cyber vulnerabilities in unexpected aspects of life.
5. AustralianSuper received a perfect AAA rating, meaning its debt is extremely low risk. The AAA rating places it higher than the governments of Victoria, Queensland and even the US. It is the first super provider to receive an AAA rating.

Elon just broke the record for the most amount of money spent on an election by an individual donor. And still lost.
But when you compare his donation to his net worth ($860 billion today according to Forbes) it is only 0.05% of his net wealth.
For the median American with $215,900 net wealth, that is the equivalent of donating $108.
Might be time to revisit the amount of money allowed in politics.

Good Morning Equity Mates. Here are your headlines for the 5th of November 2026:
Story 1: The Democrats have won control of both the House and the Senate, flipping at least six Republican Senate seats to claim a 51-seat majority, including historical Republican Texas (its first Democrat senator in almost 40 years), Kansas (its first in nearly a century), Ohio, North Carolina and Iowa. Voters cited cost-of-living pressures and opposition to the Iran war, with Trump acknowledging that fuel prices had hurt Republicans and saying “part of it was Iran”. He also said he would accept the results.
Story 2: David Jones is set to be placed into voluntary administration after talks with its landlords collapsed, with insolvency firm McGrathNicol to be named administrator. The department store, owned by private equity firm Anchorage Capital Partners, had sought to close up to half of its 38 stores and secure rent relief to attract new investment. Landlord Scentre Group, which owns Westfield, said David Jones has not paid rent since late September. The chain has been hit by cost-of-living pressures and rate rises.
Story 3: Household spending rose 0.6% in September, rebounding from a decline in August , with gains across both essentials and discretionary categories. Transport spending led the rebound, up 1.6% over the quarter. Separately, job vacancies fell 0.9% in the three months to August to 325,000, now 31% below their May 2022 peak, suggesting the labour market is cooling.
Story 4: Australian design company Canva will cut 1,270 jobs from its global workforce, in what co-founder Melanie Perkins called the “hardest moment in our 13-year history”. She said growth had slowed “for the first time in a decade” and pointed to “new technology” changing how people create and use products, without specifically naming AI. Departing staff will get at least six months’ salary.
Story 5: The Therapeutic Goods Administration has approved a daily Wegovy tablet, the first oral GLP-1 weight-loss drug cleared in Australia. Patients have until now only been able to use GLP-1 drugs as weekly injections. The pill, made by Novo Nordisk, saw three million prescriptions in its first five month

Ever wondered how many shares you’d need in a company for the dividends to pay for the product?
Well, lucky for you, we crunched the numbers.
How many Metcash shares you’d need for the dividends to cover a case of beer every month, how many Coca-Cola shares to pay for that daily Coke Zero, or even the number of CommBank shares to cover the average Australian mortgage.
