LIBERTY BURNS and PROPERTY OF THE U.S. WAR MACHINE. Photomontages created for Abby Martin’s incredible documentary Earth’s Greatest Enemy. The United States military operates as the single largest institutional polluter in the world, consuming over 269,000 barrels of oil every single day (Durham and Lancaster University, 2019). It emits over 55 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually and its carbon footprint exceeds the total emissions of more than 140 individual countries combined (Brown University Costs of War Project). The lifecycle emissions of US military equipment and NATO hardware are projected to reach 295 million metric tons by 2028 (Scientists for Global Responsibility). For context, a single flight of a military Boeing Pegasus tanker burns as much fuel as an average American driver consumes in over 40 years (Earth’s Greatest Enemy). These figures do not account for the massive pollution generated by active warfare, and excludes the immense carbon cost of reconstructing the cities levelled by US-made bombs.
