There’s a chill in the air but the sun’s still shining, the leaves are changing but the trees aren’t bare. We’re smack in the middle of (arguably) the best season in New York City, and it’s time we start drinking appropriately. Therefore, we proudly present to you: The Autumn Drinks Matrix! At first glance, you may notice the omission of the darling of fall drinks, the Pumpkin Spice Latte. It’s not for lack of availability – almost every coffee shop and cafe in the nabe is serving up their version of the famous beverage, so we purposefully set our sights on more unique libations. We split the downtown drinking scene into four quadrants: if we’re coming across your feed on a chilly day, consider exploring the top of the matrix for warming cocktails, spiced lattes and seasonal tea blends. If you’re an iced-coffee-year-round-no-matter-what kind of person, or you just fancy something strong in a chilled glass, head south down the axis. Move from left to right, and you’ll start at creative mocktails and coffees before making your way to high ABV offerings like Pumpkin IPAs and killer martinis on the right. Like pizza, yellow cabs and the Statue of Liberty, few things are as quintessentially New York as the bodega. The word “bodega” literally translates to “wine cellar” or “storeroom” in Spanish, but over time has evolved to mean a family-run general convenience store. In New York, they’re known for being open late (if not 24 hours) and often have a deli counter for sandwiches and hot food. But how did these corner stores become ubiquitous in New York City? Like most of Lower Manhattan’s history, the answer can be traced back to immigration. In the 19th and 20th centuries, small shops like these were neighborhood staples in parts of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. As Puerto Rican immigrants started arriving in the U.S. in the early-to-mid 1900s, so did more bodegas. Today, bodegas are where New Yorkers go when they need a morning bacon egg and cheese, an energy drink during the night shift, extra toilet paper, a pack of ramen or one single Claritin. They are also places to hear the neighborhood news, take shelter until the rain stops and offer pets to one of the feline employees. Bodegas are an important part of our community. Halloween is just around the corner, and plenty of downtown businesses are getting in the spirit, adorning their windows and interiors with pumpkins, ghosties and other supernatural curiosities. One spot in the nabe in particular has taken spooky season scarily seriously: Conwell Coffee & Cocktail Hall, whose spectacular Art Deco interiors have been overtaken by some terrifying decor (complimentary). Through October 31, stop by the former bank hall at 6 Hanover St. to scope out the terrifying scene, which includes barren trees, ghoulish bankers suspended from the ceiling and lots and lots of pumpkins. In addition to the scares, you can score seasonal specials like sugar & spice and pumpkin spice lattes, and an orange creamsicle mocha. Note that Conwell also boasts a stellar happy hour if you prefer to pair your hauntings with a little booze, plus there are some delectable food deals to tamp down some of the horror. Happy birthday, Lady Liberty 🗽 140 years ago today, on a rainy late October afternoon in 1886, New Yorkers gathered in anticipation for the unveiling of the nation’s “New Colossus.” Thousands crowded on both land and sea to get a look at “Liberty Enlightening the World” — better known as the Statue of Liberty. Proposed in 1865 by French politician and abolitionist Édouard de Laboulaye, Lady Liberty was a gift from France to the United States as a symbol of friendship between the two countries and a commemoration of American independence. But war in Europe and a series of fundraising woes in the United States delayed the monument’s arrival by two decades. The final push came from a fundraising campaign by newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. Through his newspaper, the New York World, Pulitzer raised the needed capital to complete the statue’s pedestal. At last, on October 28, the Statue of Liberty was ready for its dedication and big reveal. We have New England at home 🍁 Just a short ferry ride away from the bustle of Lower Manhattan, Governors Island – an important military outpost throughout most of American history – is home to stunning public greenspace, environmental non-profit organizations, arts spaces and studios, several seasonal restaurants and a state-of-the-art Italian spa. It’s also abundant with natural beauty and foliage that really shines in the autumn season. The island’s ivy-covered brick buildings and lush grassy fields may be akin to upstate idylls, but the views the island offers of the Statue of Liberty and the city’s skylines are purely New York. Heed our advice and head down to Lower Manhattan before this stretch of amazing weather turns towards winter! 27 Oct 2026

On Tuesday, October 27, three of New York City’s most legendary bars will come together for an evening of history, storytelling and libations (natch). At “The History of Bars in New York,” panelists Dan Salzstein, author and deputy editor at the New York Times, @gage.and.tollner co-founder St. John Frizell, and master mixologists Jack McGarry of @thedeadrabbitny and Barry Smyth of @frauncestavern, will discuss the evolution of bar spaces in New York City — from the taverns of the Revolutionary War to today’s craft cocktail revival. The speakers will go deep into the topic at Fraunces Tavern – an apt location for a history panel, considering Fraunces was a bar before America was a country. If that’s not draw enough, two special cocktails are being created for the evening and are included with your admission, along with light bites. The free Staten Island Ferry passes Lady Liberty. These sellers charge tourists $40 for less. 😢 At the Battery in Lower Manhattan, Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal @manhattanbp stepped in to prevent tourists from paying for a boat that never lands on the island. Consider it your civic responsibility ⚖️ The verdict is in – Jury Duty, the patio bar that sits in the center of downtown New York’s campus of courthouses and government buildings – is one of Lower Manhattan’s best outdoor drinking spots. The underrated haunt attracts all kinds of people, and its mood can often match the surrounding circus in Foley Square, where major players come through for big name trials. Tables fill up quickly during days with splashier cases, and much like the courthouses’ famed cafeterias and elevators, the bar can draw players from both sides of a case…at the same time.
