BEN ASHTON — MAY WE LIVE IN IMPOSSIBLE TIMES
Between heaven and earth, between what belongs to the real and what appears to exceed its laws, May We Live in Impossible Times unfolds.
In his new solo exhibition at Dorothy Circus Gallery London, Ben Ashton turns towards the theatrical grandeur of the Baroque, challenging the boundaries of perspective, gravity and the possible.
Bodies, architectures, clouds and draperies break free from gravity. Behind these extraordinary illusions lies an intricate physical construction: fabricated skies, suspended models and carefully orchestrated perspectives.
The impossible is not simply imagined. It is constructed.
Through extraordinary painterly virtuosity, Ashton transforms the legacy of Baroque illusionism into a striking reflection on our own uncertain times, where reality itself seems increasingly impossible.
Opening tomorrow, 10 October | 6–8 PM
Dorothy Circus Gallery London
35 Connaught Street, W2 2AZ
On view until 21 November 2026.

SILENT ENCOUNTERS | DULK
There is something almost deceptive in the beauty of Dulk’s world.
Animals emerge from impossible landscapes with the splendour of creatures belonging to another realm. Yet behind the dream lies something urgently real.
Born from Dulk’s encounters with remote landscapes and endangered ecosystems, these paintings transform wonder into awareness. His animals are never decorative presences: they carry weight, dignity and vulnerability, becoming silent witnesses to a natural world whose extraordinary beauty is being quietly consumed.
Dulk does not confront us through catastrophe. He does something perhaps more powerful: he makes us fall in love with what we are in danger of losing.

FAMILY BUSINESS | ANDREW HEM
Hem’s biography is inseparable from an interrupted geography. Born while his parents were fleeing Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge genocide and raised in Los Angeles, Andrew Hem developed his visual language between the animist culture of his Khmer ancestors and the urban energy of the American city, where graffiti became one of his earliest forms of visual education.
In Family Business, this geography becomes intimate. Workshops, markets, shops, and fish stalls become places where everyday gestures carry traces of what came before and what will continue afterwards.
The title also refers to transmission: the crafts, recipes, gestures, rhythms, and habits that pass from one generation to the next. For Hem, this has a personal meaning. His father was a painter and art teacher, and Hem eventually recognised the same impulse in himself.
Family Business is therefore not only about work, but about what is inherited through proximity: what passes from one hand to another, and what survives within a family without ever being written down.

Sally J Han | Nocturne | Fondazione Maddalena Di Giacomo
In Nocturne, Sally J Han conjures a nocturnal landscape in which the body dissolves into nature. A female figure lies on the shore, her face emerging from behind an enormous passionflower, while the dark sea and burning sunset create a scene suspended between stillness and emotional tension.
Look closely, and the boundaries begin to blur: the black cat’s luminous green eyes, a shell resting on the sand, and a star-filled sky weave night, dreams, and intuitive perception into the landscape. Through saturated colours and dramatic contrasts of light, Han transforms the external world into an interior space, where silence becomes tangible and time seems to stand still.

Matthew Grabelsky | Witchy Woman | Fondazione Maddalena Di Giacomo
In Witchy Woman, Matthew Grabelsky conjures a contemporary allegory of femininity, instinct, and nocturnal identity. A black cat-woman gazes directly at the viewer from within the New York subway, her golden eyes holding a tension between seduction and defiance, intimacy and estrangement.
Look closely, and the everyday begins to shimmer with the uncanny: celestial motifs scatter across her dress like fragments of a night sky, tattoos resemble talismans, and the urban setting gives way to myth. Drawing on archetypes of witchcraft, intuition, and transformation, Grabelsky reclaims darkness not as fear, but as a sovereign space of perception, desire, and inner freedom.

Jennybird Alcantara | AURA | Fondazione Maddalena Di Giacomo
In AURA, Jennybird Alcantara conjures a lush allegorical world where beauty, vulnerability, and mortality coexist in delicate tension. At its centre, a lamb-like hybrid figure rests with closed eyes, suspended between sleep, surrender, and transformation. Animals, flowers, fruit, and feathers gather around it, creating a scene at once devotional and uncanny.
Look closely, and the serenity begins to shift: serpentine forms intertwine, bodily mutations emerge, and the boundaries between the figure and its surroundings dissolve. Soft whites, creams, and blush tones veil a strange ecology where innocence and threat, tenderness and unease remain inseparable. Evoking an invisible presence that extends beyond the body, AURA imagines identity as an ever-changing encounter between nature, memory, and imagination.

IMPOSSIBLE TIMES by Ben Ashton on show at DCG London
The lineage of great Baroque illusionism becomes particularly palpable in Ashton’s dialogue with Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, in his vertiginous perspectives and skies pierced by light, where architecture seems to dissolve into air, clouds and ascending bodies. Yet Ashton is not interested in reproducing this language. His question is more elusive: how can painting persuade us of the existence of something we know to be impossible?
There is something in Ashton’s process that recalls the great stage illusionists, for whom wonder was born from an intricate physical reality concealed behind the enchantment. The impossible was not simply imagined. It had to be constructed, staged, rehearsed, so that before the spectator’s eyes it might finally appear weightless.
Ashton inhabits the same fascinating contradiction. He does not entrust illusion solely to imagination, nor to the artificial generation of an image. He wants to feel its body, its weight, almost its scent. He constructs it.
In his studio, clouds physically take shape. The characters are raised on scaffolding above his head so that Ashton can observe from life extreme foreshortenings and otherwise inaccessible perspectives. Behind images that appear to defy gravity lies a tangible theatre of suspended bodies, structures, fabricated skies and meticulously orchestrated viewpoints.

IMPOSSIBLE TIMES by Ben Ashton
Dorothy Circus Gallery in London presents Impossible Times, the new solo exhibition by Ben Ashton, now open to the public.
The title emerges from a deliberate transformation of the celebrated expression “May you live in interesting times”, long and mistakenly attributed to an ancient Chinese curse and popularised in the West in the years preceding the Second World War.
Ashton replaces interesting with impossible, reflecting on the cyclical nature of crisis and on that peculiar human condition by which every age, while it is being lived, can seem to push beyond the edge of what had previously been thought possible.
It is from this idea of the impossible, not as an exercise of imagination but as an experience capable of unsettling our certainties about the real, that this new cycle takes form.

Now Open: ‘Impossible Times’ by Ben Ashton | DCG London
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of Ben Ashton’s solo exhibition at Dorothy Circus Gallery London.
In May We Live in Impossible Times, Ben Ashton turns to the Baroque its theatricality, pathos, and vertiginous architectures of illusion, to explore the unstable boundary between the real and the impossible.
Drawing on art history while embracing distortion, fractured perspectives, and seemingly digital glitches rendered entirely in paint, Ashton creates images in which bodies, draperies, clouds, and architecture appear to slip free from gravity.
The exhibition brings together a new Baroque inspired body of work with a selection from his preceding Rococo series, continuing his dialogue with the cyclical nature of history and the ways the past is continually reinvented in the service of the present.
On view until 21 November 2026.

FAMILY BUSINESS by Andrew Hem
Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome presents Family Business, a new solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Andrew Hem, now open to the public.
Within Family Business, the shop emerges as a space where knowledge is passed down. A craft is learned through the hands, a recipe through taste, a way of arranging objects through observation. Knowledge can take shape simply through time spent alongside someone. The family thus becomes an archive without an inventory: what it preserves is not necessarily written down, but lives on in gestures, rhythms, places and habits.

NOW OPEN | double solo exhibition SILENT ENCOUNTERS by DULK and FAMILY BUSINESS by Andrew Hem
Dorothy Circus Gallery presents Family Business by Andrew Hem and Silent Encounters by Dulk in Rome: two solo exhibitions conceived in dialogue, in which profoundly different painterly languages converge in a reflection on transmission, belonging and the fragile continuity of living things.
On one side is Andrew Hem’s human world, shaped by the everyday gestures of work, family-run shops, markets and those small geographies in which a community unwittingly preserves its memory. On the other is Dulk’s animal world, where polar bears, rhinoceroses, elephants, whales, turtles, birds and marine creatures become the protagonists of ecosystems as magnificent as they are precarious.
