Today Alysa Liu, 20, became the first American woman to win the Olympic Gold Medal for figure skating since 2002. She is a remarkable person who I photographed on assignment for Sports Illustrated in 2019, when she was just a 14-year-old child prodigy. Last week we lost an extraordinary person in the world of photojournalism. Jean François Leroy, founder of Visa Pour L’Image photography festival in Perpignan, France, was an advocate and champion of photojournalism. This photo is from last year when he honored my work with a photo exhibition. Here, he is sharing his wisdom and insight that I will keep with me. He founded this festival in 1989 and every year since, much of the best work of the year was celebrated here. The photography community lost a legend but we are stronger with his contributions and commitment to showcase the important work of photojournalists around the world.
