American rapper Macklemore, an outspoken critic of Israel’s war on Gaza, said on Friday that major US concert venues, including New York’s Madison Square Garden, refused to book his Free Palestine tour that just concluded three dates in Europe.
The ‘Thrift Shop’ performer launched the effort after he was removed as the opening act on musician Ed Sheeran’s concert tour in August. Macklemore said at the time that stadium owners had objected to him saying “Free Palestine” on stage.
Since then, nine US venues declined to allow him to book available dates through the end of the year, Macklemore said on social media. The venues included Madison Square Garden and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
“The shows were not going to be allowed to happen in these venues,” he said in a post. “In over 20 years of touring, I’ve never experienced anything like this.”

In 2022, the Canadian-born novelist Nita Prose rocketed to fame with her debut novel, The Maid, which sold over two million copies. She constructed a murder mystery around the character of Molly Gray, a remarkably dedicated and diligent maid at the Regency Grand Hotel (RGH). Molly plays detective when a body is discovered in the hotel’s opulent penthouse suite.
Prose’s debut was followed by The Mystery Guest (2023), and The Maid’s Secret (2025) completes the trilogy. (Incidentally, The Mistletoe Mystery, a novella featuring Molly, was also published in 2024.)
While each novel can be read as a standalone work, readers will be drawn to read all three because Molly’s character and the backstory of her beloved grandmother, Flora Gray, steal the show throughout. Although the first two novels were ostensibly murder mysteries, a large portion of each was committed to underscoring Flora’s story, who basically trained Molly in the arts of housekeeping and housecleaning.
The Maid’s Secret does not contain a murder per se. However, it focuses on a piece of art which Molly inherited from her grandmother, and which she firmly believes is a good imitation of a Fabergé egg. The originals were trinkets (egg-shaped objects made of precious metals and gems) designed by the House of Fabergé, which acquired great value over time, especially due to the patronage of Russian tsars who often presented them to their wives and loved ones.

It was a unique experience for music aficionados and lovers of the art of filmmaking on Thursday evening when French filmmaker Vincent Moon presented his ‘live cinema’ at the Alliance Francaise de Karachi. What he does with a great deal of expertise is that he films musicians, mostly in villages, and once done with that, he edits those visual recordings live on stage enhanced by music in front of an audience. He did the same on Thursday.
Prior to that, speaking to the attendees, who largely constituted of young boys and girls, Moon said, “I’m glad to be here. This is my first time in Pakistan. I have been travelling and documenting music for more than 20 years. I have been trying to find, in a very singular way, musical cultures. My focus, particularly in the past year, has been on rituals, shamanism, trends, Sufism and many other topics like that. My desire is to question how can we approach reality in a fairly direct way.”
He said in the past he used to do a lot of stuff like rock and Indie pop bands but lost the plot. Then he tried to connect as directly as possible with reality. “Musicians are human beings. It is really about how we make sounds together. I was living in Paris. I did not want to be part of the music business. I was trying to look at the radical practice of filmmaking, which means, doing everything with the people [that I come across], with the community. That’s what I’m doing in Pakistan. I’m going around and meeting people… I do not sign contract with people. I do not send films away.”
The Director of Alliance Francaise de Karachi, Emmanuel Bruerec said, “Moon’s art is looking for music and musicians around the world. After that he shows everything he has seen [to viewers], makes music from different countries directly onto screen. He mixes images and music. He can adapt to whatever you like to hear, be it Persian or Pakistani music.”

Protesters broke into the construction site of a Microsoft data centre in Amsterdam on Friday at the start of two days of rallies that are part of a growing global backlash over the rapid build-out of computing power needed for AI.
Activist groups have announced actions in 16 countries over the weekend, according to the “Stop Dirty Data Centres” coalition, which is rallying environmental groups and digital rights campaigns behind calls to pause large-scale construction.

Iran said Saturday its military has grown “stronger” since the outset of its war with the United States, which has offered a $20 million reward for information about Tehran’s nuclear programme.
Mediators have been working to prevent any resumption of fighting after months of deadlock in the Middle East conflict, which began when the United States and Israel attacked Iran in late February.
Tehran has sought to limit traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries about one-fifth of global oil consumption.

Qatar’s Prime Minister said the country’s mediation efforts between the US and Iran were continuing to prevent the situation in the region from spiraling out of control, Al Jazeera TV reports.
The US administration remained willing to find a solution even after the midterm elections, signalling that Washington’s interest in reaching an agreement had not changed, Qatar’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said.
Significant progress had been made and Al-Thani expressed confidence that a settlement could be reached.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Friday announced a controversial revision of a special electricity tariff introduced as an incentive to revive industrial activity, while approving an additional burden of Rs2.37 per unit on electricity consumers for November.
The decision, opposed by the industrial sector, is likely to have a negative impact on all electricity consumers, including those served by K-Electric and other distribution companies (Discos).
All four members of the regulator unanimously held the Power Division and its subordinate entities responsible for failing to fulfil their legal obligations within the prescribed timelines, pushing Nepra into an unprecedented deadlock and potentially increasing costs for electricity consumers across the country.
