Before the world knew Muhammad Ali, there was Cassius Clay, a boy growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, with a mother whose influence helped shape his life. Her name was Odessa “Bird” Clay.
In Prime Video’s The Greatest, the first authorized scripted series about Ali’s life, actress @danagourrier brings Bird into focus, offering audiences a closer look at the woman behind the champion. The series stars @jaalenbest as Ali, with his widow, Lonnie Ali, serving as an executive producer.
In an exclusive conversation with @momentswithtunisha, Gourrier discussed the responsibility of portraying a woman whose story has often been overshadowed by her son’s legacy.
Her research led her beyond the familiar image of a mother and homemaker. Bird was a domestic worker and seamstress who took pride in her appearance and how she represented her family. But Gourrier also considered the anger, anxiety, and pressure that might have existed beneath her composed exterior. “How could it not?” she reflected, considering what Black women of that generation carried.
As a mother herself, Gourrier connected Bird’s experience to the daily work of holding a family together: preparing meals, paying bills, raising children, and navigating a world that offered Black women few conveniences and even fewer accommodations.
She also described the responsibility of earning the Ali family’s trust, particularly with Lonnie present on set. For Gourrier, honoring the history did not mean abandoning her own artistry. “We are still artists,” she said. “It’s still artistry.”
But perhaps her most powerful reflection came when discussing the woman she was chosen to portray, “I think if you ask Muhammad Ali who the real champion is, he would say it’s his mother.”
Bird deserves to be remembered as more than the mother of a global icon. She was a woman with her own identity, experiences, determination, and story.
Because sometimes, to understand greatness, we must look beyond the person receiving the applause and recognize the people whose labor helped build the foundation.

Growing up in Louisiana, Dana Gourrier — who plays Odessa “Bird” Clay, the mother of Muhammad Ali in Prime Video’s new series “The Greatest” — watched her parents navigate segregation firsthand. Now, she brings to life a woman who helped shape one of the most influential figures of the 20th century
The New Orleans native, whose credits include Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” and “The Hateful Eight,” explains how she pieced together Bird’s story, exploring the experiences of Black women in the 1960s and portraying the complexities of Ali’s family life.
Gourrier's portrayal brings closer look at the woman behind the legend and the sacrifices, strength and devotion that helped shape Muhammad Ali.

Fifteen years of doing the work, quietly. This is Dana Gourrier’s moment. 🤍
@danagourrier has spent years under the radar in “P-Valley,” “Django Unchained” and “The Hateful Eight.” Now she steps into the role she calls the one it took her fifteen years to find: Odessa “Bird” Clay, Muhammad Ali’s mother, in Prime Video’s “The Greatest.”
Dana is a mom too, and she brought her own son into every scene: the sleepless nights, the worry, the unmatched joy. She tells MOMÉ about the guilt that still finds her in the makeup chair, the advice that finally quieted it, and what she hopes her son sees when he watches his mother on screen.
“I hope he comes to understand that his own mother is a fighter.”
