A group of Cornell undergraduates has collected more than 500 samples from 300 bodies of water, including all 11 Finger Lakes, plus tributaries, ponds, and even the puddles that linger after a rain. They screened every sample for 24 common PFAS and added the results to an interactive map. It reveals some hot spots, but it also eases some worries: overall, PFAS concentrations in the Finger Lakes are relatively low. The students found that the amount of surface water in the Finger Lakes region seems to effectively dilute PFAS, so that overall levels remain low. The hot spots – where levels did exceed guidance values for safety set by New York state – are largely in places the group expected: in standing bodies of water near airports and fire training stations. At these sites, de-icing fluids for planes and fire-extinguishing foams, known sources of PFAS, appear to spike the levels, which then decline over time. Those hot spots are not sources of drinking water and are often isolated from other waterways, limiting their impact. The student team, now in its second generation after the project’s initial members graduated, also hope to influence the state’s monitoring of PFAS and plan to use the accumulated data to identify high-priority areas in other regions of New York. 04 Nov 2026 A quiet look at a Finger Lakes autumn. This Homecoming, reconnect with a classmate, a mentor, or a friend, wherever you are. 16 Oct 2026 For the first time in more than a decade, the line is back. Cornell Athletics will bring back The Great Wait on Saturday, September 19, as the traditional kickoff to men's ice hockey student season ticket sales, but this year’s edition trades the overnight campout of Great Waits past for a single morning at Bartels Hall. “There’s nothing like the energy of the Lynah Faithful, and seeing students lined up again to be part of that is exactly what makes this program special,” said Casey Jones ’90, the Jay R. Bloom ’77 Head Coach of Cornell Men’s Hockey. “Our fans push us every single night, and I’m excited for a new group of students to experience what it means to be part of that tradition.” Students can begin lining up at 7 a.m. for music and food giveaways, with the Cornell Marching Band performing live at 8 a.m. Ticket sales open at 9 a.m.; the first 200 students in line will receive free Cornell hockey t-shirts. Swipe to see what the Great Wait looked like in the 1970s. 17 Sep 2026 From the classrooms to the quads and everywhere in between, our Cornellians have been making the most of the first few weeks back on the Hill. 16 Sep 2026 Some of our favorite moments at Cornell happen between the big ones: A laugh in between class, ivy climbing brick, the walk home under McGraw Tower. 13 Sep 2026 This morning on the Arts Quad, Cornell Republicans and Cornell Democrats joined together to plant American flags in honor of lives lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001. Throughout the morning, the McGraw Tower chimes are tolling to mark when the planes crashed and towers fell, as our community pauses to honor and remember those killed. Our community is also invited to visit the memorial in the Anabel Taylor Hall rotunda dedicated to the 21 Cornell alumni who died on 9/11. 11 Sep 2026 What happens when a university challenges its own community to unplug? That’s the idea behind Cornell Unplugged Week: seven days of screen-free meals, in-person events, and faculty-led experiments that encourage meaningful connections beyond our devices. From September 14-20, the Cornell community is invited to put the phone down and look up. Cornell Unplugged is an opportunity to share a meal without distractions, attend an event face-to-face, and reconnect with the people and places that make Cornell unique. 01 Jan 1970 A 2,500 year-old, 7-foot-tall statue was discovered by researchers with the Harvard-Cornell Archaeological Exploration of Sardis. The statue had been broken into two main pieces and reused, face down, as paving stones on an ancient Roman avenue. A team of conservators excavated around the statue to gradually reveal its full shape and size in the ground. “After all the anticipation, I was worried the statue might be underwhelming, that we’d dig it up and find its front weathered beyond recognition," said James McCurley, a Harvard student who worked on the dig over the summer. "Discovering that the statue was not only well-preserved, but almost intact and 2,500 years old was a wonderful surprise.” When conservation is complete, the fragments will be joined and the statue will be displayed in a Turkish archaeological museum, along with other finds from Sardis. Last month, the Dyce Lab for Honey Bee Studies welcomed the community for its annual honey extraction event. Swipe through to see the honey make it into the jar. 03 Sep 2026
