One week ago, on Sept. 7, I kneeled on the summit of Cerro Torre just before 10pm, by myself. In that moment I mostly felt only extremely anxious to get down the mountain safely, but it was the completion of a goal that I had set more than a decade ago, to solo Cerro Torre in winter. To say that the stars aligned is figurative, but to say that the Sun, Earth, and Moon aligned is in this case literal, and the gorgeous terrain of the Chaltén Massif was illuminated by a brilliantly bright full moon. This ascent, by the Ragni Route, was my 10th of Cerro Torre. While some of my previous ascents of Cerro Torre were already among my life’s most meaningful ascents (Tiempos Perdidos with @kellycordes, the Torres Traverse with @rolo_garibotti, and The Torres Traverse in a day with @alexhonnold), this might be the most special one. Succeeding on this climb required ice climbing skills, mixed climbing skills, rock climbing skills, snow climbing skills, big wall skills, a high level of physical endurance, skills to thrive day after day in a cold, harsh environment, ski mountaineering skills, cross-country skiing skills, and even mountain biking skills came in handy - all activities I have been practicing since I was very young. Past seasons of climbing on Denali were equally important preparation as past seasons of waterfall climbing in the Canadian Rockies and past seasons of big wall climbing in Yosemite. My ascent is the first winter solo of Cerro Torre, but this was almost achieved already in 2016 by Austrian über-badass @markuspucher, who retreated just one pitch below the summit - a very impressive effort that I highly respect. The spectacular photos in this post are all by @tylekki, and it was no small feat for him to ski to the Circo de las Altares, the basin below Cerro Torre’s west face, and capture them. For those who are interested in the full story, I have just posted a long account of this climb on my blog. @patagonia_climb @petzl_official @scarpa_world @evileye.eyewear @totemmt @showagroup @plum_officiel @samaya_equipment 14 Sep 2025 Last Monday (Sept. 19) I completed a climbing goal that had been on my mind for the past 9 years: to solo Fitz Roy in winter by the Supercanaleta. It was a very intense experience that leveraged the total skillset I have built up over the past 22 years of climbing and alpinism. The climb and descent left me wasted physically, mentally, and psychologically. Being alone on the summit of Fitz Roy in winter, at night, felt very, very far away from everything. For those who are interested in all the details (and probably too much detail for most!), I have just posted a long account on my blog. In the coming days I’ll share a few more photos here, but for the moment I wanted to post just this one, which I think is the most spectacular photo I have ever taken while solo climbing. This photo is looking down the last 5th-class pitch of the Supercanaleta during the last minutes of daylight, with the sun dipping behind low clouds above the South Patagonian Icecap. Much thanks to the people that helped me put together this trip at the last minute: @rolo_garibotti, @alisa.etoh.owens, @aylenaike, and @maximoodell. @patagonia_climb @petzl_official @scarpaspa @totemmt 23 Sep 2022 Certainly the best climb that I managed to do during this recent season in El Chaltén was the Southeast Ridge of Cerro Torre, with @tylerkarow. During the day of our ascent, December 28, @tylekki was nearby in the Norwegos camp with his high-tech toys. The result is some really spectacular photos, in my opinion. Thanks Ty! @patagonia_climb @petzl_official @scarpa_world @totemmt @evileye.eyewear @samaya_equipment 11 Mar 2025 A handful of captured moments during the past couple of very busy months. I've been in the mountains extremely little, but have at least been rock climbing and training a decent amount, and have had lots of good times with friends and family. @patagonia_climb @petzl_official @scarpa_world @evileye.eyewear 07 Nov 2026 High on Cerro Torre, solo, in winter. @colinhaley1 from our new film Alone On The Torre. His point is very true, that the opportunity to be in the back of one of the most spectacular valleys on Earth, in the most beautiful season, is something to cherish. Something I do not cherish are the stupidly-heavy backpacks that I have been carrying around these mountains recently. Every voyage is an opportunity for learning and to become wiser. One lesson that I have re-learned on this trip, far from the first time (maybe I’m a slow learner with some subjects), is that for me, really heavy backpacks are one of the most reliable ways to diminish the joy in climbing. In the future I want to de-prioritize climbing ambitions that involve carrying such ridiculously heavy packs. Another realization, far from new but more and more reinforced, is that my love is enduring and might never tire for skis, bicycles, and tomatoes. 13 Aug 2026 My longtime friend and climbing partner, @dytrsi, came to visit for a week from the faraway land of California. Navigating a heatwave and horrendously melted conditions in the mountains, we still managed to have a bunch of fun: Premier de Corvée on le Brévent, Contamine on l'Aiguille du Midi, Ave Caesar on le Petit Clocher du Portalet, and Burgasser on il Dente del Gigante. He missed the best part of the week (forest rave! 😁😍), but I think still got a taste of Chamonix magic! @patagonia_climb @petzl_official @scarpa_world @evileye.eyewear 07 Aug 2026 Friday was my first day back in the high mountains since going up Mont Blanc three weeks ago. That hiatus was mostly because I've been very busy with other things, but also because the current conditions are the most melted and ugly in recorded history. @tylerkarow had arrived in Chamonix for his first time, however, so I wanted to show him a good experience. Given his love of quality granite, and the current conditions, going to the Grand Capucin was a logical choice. The main reason that I don’t climb on the Grand Capucin very often is because when in Chamonix I prefer to make day trips to the mountains, and the Grand Capucin is hard to do in a day from town. We caught the second bin up the Midi, but the Panoramic was late to open, so it wasn't until around 8:15 that we left the Torino hut. The climbing on the Lecco Route, which I had mostly done before, was superb from the bottom to the top. We were never rushing, but moving consistently efficiently. We finished the last rappel at 16:40, and were packed up about ten minutes later. With the last official lift down from the Midi at 18:00, it seemed our chances of making it were very slim, but we decided to try nonetheless. What followed was a savage bout of exercise, but was totally worth it when we just barely caught the last lift down with the CDMB employees! @patagonia_climb @petzl_official @scarpa_world @evileye.eyewear 25 Jul 2026 Upon getting back to Chamonix from the Himalaya, I knew that my body was in rough shape, and that I needed to dedicate time and energy to activities that I find a bit boring: stretching, strength training, PT, and yoga. However, after so much time at high altitude, I was surely well acclimatized, even after more than a week back in Chamonix. I used my abnormally high hematocrit as an excuse to go have fun instead of doing the boring stuff, and did a morning of cardio alpinism today on Mont Blanc. Starting from the church in Les Houches just past 2:30am, I put in a decent effort, and made it to the summit in 5:18. I decided to take it easy on the way down, and am glad I did, because even so the outing made my back somewhat stiff again, and my IT-bands were on the verge of painful on the descent. I don't need a coach to tell me that, from a training perspective, climbing Mont Blanc today was a stupid use of time. Everything in life is a balance though, and scampering up to the top of the Alps with a pounding heart felt worthwhile in other ways. Enough being a naughty boy though, the rat is fed and I will finally get disciplined! 🙈 On a more depressing note, the massive heat wave in France has been brutal for the mountains, and conditions look typical for September. I don't have any big plans in the Alps this summer, so it doesn’t directly affect me all that much, but it nonetheless makes me sad just to see how much ice will be forever lost this year. 22 Jun 2026
