This is Kelvin Clay Fonseca @kelvin.gb
Born in Brasília, Brazil, and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Kelvin is a Black Belt under @paulomelo_gb and currently lives in Austin, TX, where he trains @gbsouthaustin.
Kelvin has never taken the conventional path—because he’s always found his own. Born with Arthrogryposis, a condition that limited his limb development, he spent much of his life moving on his knees. But from an early age, he developed a mindset rooted in curiosity, creativity, and relentless problem-solving. He didn’t wait for solutions—he created them.
In 2011, he found Jiu-Jitsu and became a pioneer in the world of Para Jiu-Jitsu, competing internationally and earning multiple titles. As his connection to the sport grew, so did his passion for capturing its stories. That passion led to the creation of Clay Media @claymedia.us, where Kelvin now works as a photographer, videographer, designer, and media strategist—serving some of the biggest names and tournaments in the sport.
In 2024, Kelvin underwent a bilateral above-knee amputation—a life-changing challenge that might have stopped others, but only pushed him to adapt once again. From a wheelchair, he continued photographing events, staying active in the community that shaped him.
What sets Kelvin apart isn’t just his skill or resilience—it’s the way he sees the world. He captures moments with the eye of someone who’s lived the fight, someone who understands what it means to push through. Through every challenge, he continues to tell stories—his own, and those of the athletes around him.
Presently he is a 1st degree black belt under Prof Alexandre "Dande" Santos.

I had every excuse to not compete at World Masters.
My mouth still hurt from wisdom tooth surgery the previous week.
I only got to train 4 times this month while my opponents were training 4+ times a week.
I’ve only been back to competition for 3 months after my serious leg fracture end of last year.
My blue belt BJJ record was 8-70 leading up to this tournament.
I could’ve saved myself some serious money registering for the tournament and traveling to Vegas and any one of those excuses would’ve been totally legitimate should someone ask why I wasn’t competing.
But that’s not me. I wanted to do World Masters for the first time and the circumstances are irrelevant. Winning is irrelevant. Pushing myself and having fun in a sport I love is all that matters. One day the wins will come.
Did I win? No. Did I get submitted? Nope! Do I have any regrets? Absolutely not. And that is more than anyone else who found an excuse not to sign up can say.
Thank you to my lovinho @kelvin.gb for coaching me (even though it meant losing out on his photography gifts) 💙
See y’all in Vegas again next year 🫡 in the meantime, time to prepare for Abu Dhabi Jiu Jitsu World Championships 👀

After winning his second consecutive IBJJF American National Championship in June 2025, Masters 3 black belt Michael Kingrey set a goal that very few athletes in his position would even attempt:
Qualify for IBJJF Adult Black Belt Worlds.
Unlike Masters Worlds, qualification for Adult Worlds is earned strictly through IBJJF season ranking points accumulated through podium finishes at major events. Athletes must earn a minimum of 80 points to qualify.
At 43 years old, and after only receiving his black belt at age 40, Kingrey began pursuing that goal while continuing to compete successfully at the highest levels of Masters competition.
Since setting the goal, his major results have included:
🥉 IBJJF Masters Worlds
🥈 IBJJF European Championship
Heading into the Orlando Open this weekend, Kingrey sat at 54 ranking points and needed a major performance to secure qualification.
He delivered.
Kingrey earned:
🥇 Gold in his division
🥈 Silver in the open class
The result added 40.5 points to his season total, bringing him to 94.5 points and officially securing qualification for IBJJF Adult Black Belt Worlds.
Adult season results:
Division:
🥇 Orlando Open
🥈 Portland Open
🥈 Phoenix Open
🥈 Nashville Open
Open Class:
🥈 Orlando Open
🥈 Phoenix Open
🥉 Nashville Open
Kingrey is scheduled to compete at Adult Worlds on May 30th, just 10 days after turning 44 years old.
What makes the accomplishment especially notable is the timeline behind it. Most athletes competing at the adult black belt level have spent years competing in adult divisions and earned their black belts much earlier in life. Kingrey entered his first adult black belt season in his 40s and earned qualification through consistent podium finishes against elite competition.
For Kingrey, the accomplishment represents more than rankings and medals. It reflects years of discipline, consistency, and the willingness to continue pursuing ambitious goals regardless of age or conventional expectations.
Next stop: IBJJF Adult Black Belt Worlds.

The date is set… May 16th I’ll be competing for the first time since my leg fracture, starting with @compnet_texas.usa 🙌🏻 grateful to have the @graciebarrabryantx team helping get me ready.
