Nestled within the foothills of the French Pyrenees, Château de Gudanes is an extraordinary eighteenth-century residence whose history is as captivating as its architecture. Built upon the remains of a medieval fortress dating back to at least 1213, the present château was commissioned in 1741 by Louis-Gaspard de Sales, Marquis de Gudanes, and designed by celebrated architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel, whose work also includes the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Its elegant neoclassical façade conceals richly decorated interiors, where grand staircases, ornamental plasterwork, painted ceilings and elaborate salons evoke the splendour of aristocratic France. Yet its past is far from entirely romantic. Pillaged during the French Revolution and again during the 1830 War of the Demoiselles, the château has witnessed centuries of conflict and upheaval. Unsurprisingly, its abandoned corridors and concealed passages have inspired tales of ghosts and unexplained occurrences, although no paranormal activity has ever been verified. After decades of neglect, the château was acquired by an Australian couple in 2013, who began an extraordinary restoration, gradually uncovering its forgotten architectural treasures. Sometimes in a big restoration project, it’s hard to remember where you started. Standing in the kitchen today it’s easy to forget how it once looked when we first saw it. I think before and afters are a good way of measuring progress and to reflect upon how many steps taken one by one can build what was broken. And so this is a journey down memory lane of the kitchen, which had fallen in three levels when we purchased the Chateau. Autumn is slowly giving way to winter here in the French Pyrenees. The mornings are cooler now, with mist settling over the landscape, low clouds covering the mountains and even Gudanes. The first signs of frost appearing are on the ground. Tiny icicles are beginning to form, while the sun still breaks through the clouds throughout the day. It’s a beautiful reminder of the changing seasons and the quiet rhythms of nature at Château de Gudanes 🇫🇷💕 it’s also been a busy bee cleaning, clearing and pruning shrubs, replacing the pool pump, repairing rain gutters, replacing my broken iPhone, planting tulips, trimming lavender, roses and rosemary, we did 2 bridal photoshoots and a CEO forum in-between and excitedly more overnight stays where we meet so many interesting and kind new faces. As another beautiful summer at the château continues, our thoughts are wandering towards the next summer yet to come… 🌻☀️🏰 To long golden days beneath the Pyrénées sun, mornings spent wandering through French marchés and brocantes, baskets filled with flowers and produce, leisurely afternoons by the pool, and candlelit dinners lingering long into the evening. And so, it is with great joy that we share the release of our Summer 2027 Château Ateliers, with reservations now officially open. Next June and July, we invite you to step through the château doors and experience the French summer slowly - surrounded by centuries of history, breathtaking nature, beautiful food, old traditions, creativity and the simple pleasure of having nowhere else you need to be. Our ateliers are intimate gatherings, created as an invitation to make the château your home for a little while.
