Technical production, system design, engineering and sound mixing across both museum floors by C.A.V.E.
As the largest survey of AJ’s work to date, this collection lives and breathes a concept of images as “fugitive, virulent cultural agents.” Alienating, yet viscerally personal, he slashes into his viewers, rendering anyone and anything an unwilling participant in his vortex of time-axis manipulation– like shoving centuries of cultural history into a food processor and being splattered with its residual material, even with the lid on.

On view now at The Shed: Doug Aitken “Lightscape”
Lightscape, a new film-based installation by artist Doug Aitken, considers our landscape of diversity, creating a vulnerable and humanistic portrait that chronicles the search to find one’s individuality in a world of continuous transformation. It follows multiple characters in a Robert Altman–esque structure, taking us on a journey that explores a landscape in the midst of extreme change—from the deep ecology of vast deserts and desolate mountainscapes to futuristic robotics factories and the digital realm.
Music lies at the core of the film, featuring a unique collaboration with the LA Master Chorale and the LA Phil. It includes original recordings—conducted by Gustavo Dudamel—of iconic minimalist composers and artists such as Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Meredith Monk and original scores by Beck & LA LOM and Doug Aitken with Grant Gershon. The visual and sonic landscapes shift gears as the characters’ narratives develop, ranging from hardcore techno to haunting compositions.
C.A.V.E. designed and installed an 8.2 multichannel audio system for the piece.

“We chose to shoot this project on Verita 5206 2perf 35mm as an experiment. I had only shot day exteriors with it and was excited to see how it would handle darkness. Getting the scans back was very exciting. The contrast curve behaves very differently from Vision 3, allowing for new ways of manipulating and controlling he image. The heavy blacks and narrower gamut of this new stock brought back memories of some of our favorite movies the early 2000s, a look that I found difficult to achieve on Vision 3. It’s exciting to have access to a new tool that expands what’s possible when shooting on film.” — Owen Smith-Clark

Now open in New York: Oberon, a “jewel box” restaurant tucked away inside the recently completed extension to the New Museum, designed by OMA New York.
C.A.V.E. created the space’s sound system design featuring custom cork surface-mounted and banquette-inset d&b audiotechnik speakers, as well as provided consultation and technical services for Ian Cheng’s “Shrine Oberon”, an interactive living artwork stationed behind the restaurant’s bar.

This is the final weekend to see Nihaal Faizal’s (video art). Thanks to everyone who made the trek out to the furthest reaches of North Greenpoint these past few weeks, shared a beer, and mulled over some of these classics from our sidewalk. We’ll be here at 128 Dupont St. from 7:00-9:00 tonight and Saturday, we’d love to see you.

On view now at Arts and Letters: Josiane Pozi’s “In Pursuit of Feeling”
Josiane M.H. Pozi (b. 1998; London, UK) attempts to meet experience where it is. Perhaps because so much of life now passes through screens, Pozi channels the unconscious instinct of the internet: always first person and always a disclosure that seeks to bridge distances.
In Pursuit of Feeling takes up that practice and presents films and videos Pozi made over the last eight years, remixed and rearranged into an installation at Arts and Letters. Seeing it requires positions that are unexpected: gazing out a window, lying prone on the floor, or hunching over a black well. These are not diversions. Rather, they are a request to participate, a request to meet Pozi where she is.
