In the Housing Estateâ
Urban Birds | Highly Commendedâ

'This year, I finally decided to photograph birds in the urban landscape. The photo shows a house martin approaching the nest it had built in one of the windows of a housing estate in Warsawâs Tarchomin district. I took the photo from my own balcony; I think it perfectly captures the coexistence between birds and humans.' â

'This photo of a hooded crow was taken on the grounds of the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport, which today is not only an important recreational area for Berliners but also home to a wide variety of animal species, some of them rare and endangered. Among them are the hooded crows, which can be found all over the city and therefore tend to go unnoticed by most people. What makes the hooded crow so special, however, is its intelligence and behaviour. Apparently, the crows have learned to use the water dispensers distributed throughout the field, just like humans do, instead of searching for natural water sources. It hadnât rained in the city for several weeks, so a lot of the usual water sources like puddles at Tempelhofer Feld had dried up. This allowed me to take this photo on a hot late-summer day after observing this special behaviour for the first time in a small group of crows. After taking a few photos vertically, I switched to horizontal format to achieve a better composition. Using the fence in the background as a guide, I positioned myself so that the crowâs eye was located precisely in the upper right third of the image. At the same time, the crowâs posture creates a very special pose, as it triumphantly places its foot on the water dispenser and displays its skill. Furthermore, I made sure to use a fast shutter speed to capture all the movements of the crow, as well as those of the water jet, in sharp focus, and thus this special moment was created.â

'Namibia is one of the driest countries in the world. In the evening, giraffes and other herbivores take turns at the watering hole to quench their thirst and, for some, to bathe. Here too, every evening, this heron comes to quench its thirst before perching in the nearby tree.' â

Marine-adapted from Head to Toeâ
Black and White | Highly Commendedâ
Suliman Alatiqi, Kuwaitâ

'In the Sea of Cortez, Mexico, the brown booby is commonly seen resting on the waterâs surface. It spends a significant portion of its life in the open ocean, flying and plunge-diving for food. With no platforms to perch on in the open sea, the ability to rest on the waterâs surface is an adaptive behaviour that helps it conserve energy while remaining close to its feeding grounds. Its water-repellent feathers prevent it from becoming too heavy for takeoff and also help insulate its body to maintain heat. Moreover, its rare totipalmate foot structure â in which all four toes are connected by webbing â allows it to efficiently paddle through the water while diving for food and gives it the ability to launch itself from the waterâs surface, a task that requires strong propulsion. The dagger-like shape of its beak helps keep it streamlined when diving to minimise drag, while the sharp tip aids in piercing its slippery prey, such as fish and squid. Finally, its forward- positioned eyes provide binocular overlap, which aids in depth perception when judging plunge-dives. This over-under portrait, captured with a close-focus wide-angle technique, aims to emphasise the key features of this marine species from head to toe in its natural resting place.' â

'I took this photo while visiting the Yanacocha Biological Reserve in Ecuador. I was captivated by great sapphirewing hummingbirds in flight. They are very colourful and look like large butterflies. The photo shows a male in flight. The great sapphirewing is one of the worldâs largest, slowest-flying hummingbirds, found in high-altitude Andean cloud forests (2,800m to treeline) in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Males are 15.5â19 cm long with brilliant blue wings and green bodies, while females have cinnamon underparts.' â

Black Grouse Flying in to Display on a Frosty Morningâ
Birds in Flight | Highly Commendedâ
Ivan Sjögren, Sweden @sjogrenstudioâ
â
'The black grouse lek is something special: a true highlight of the Scandinavian wilderness. There are several commercial hides from which to photograph these birds, but instead I scouted my own location together with some photography friends. It requires a lot of effort to reach. As the crow flies, it is not too far â around 5â6km â but the route crosses extremely difficult terrain. Black grouse also usually display during the snowmelt, which often means walking through ice that does not hold or through a lot of water. You also have to carry all your photographic equipment, tent, food and other supplies on your back, before spending a cold night out on the mossy bog. All of this is totally worth it as soon as you hear the first grouse land in front of your hide. Panning the camera to catch a flying grouse from the hide is not easy, but I finally managed to capture this male coming in to land in the early morning.' â

'I found a scaly-breasted munia building a nest by a field. I waited over 10 metres away to photograph it carrying grass. It was very difficult due to its tiny size, fast speed and messy background at takeoff. After days of waiting, the nest was done and I finally got the satisfying shot I wanted.'â

Kestrels Fightingâ
Bird Behaviour | Highly Commendedâ
Sachendra Yadav, India @Naturesnapshotsandmore â
â
'This photo was taken at Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary, Maharashtra, during an early morning session while I was waiting for the kestrel to take flight. With my frame pre-set, I anticipated a clean flight shot. Instead, an unexpected moment unfolded when another bird suddenly flew in from behind, leading to a brief mid-air tussle with wings fully spread and talons extended The encounter lasted only seconds, but instinct and preparation allowed me to capture its intensity and symmetry. It is a reminder that wildlife photography rewards patience, awareness, and sometimes, a little luck.' â

Bird Behaviour | Highly Commendedâ
Marek Jackowski, Polandâ @marek_jackowskiâ

'I spent two weeks in April 2024 observing and photographing the endangered marvelous spatuletail hummingbird in the Pomacochas area, northern Peru. Due to deforestation, the number of these amazing hummingbirds is unfortunately rapidly decreasing. These hummingbirds form leks between December and May. I was very lucky to witness this behaviour, which was truly one of the most spectacular wildlife experiences of my life. Males perform a dramatic, high-speed courtship display at communal leks, using their unique tail feathersâ two of which end in large violet-blue spatules â to attract females. In this image, two males are displaying and competing for a female. The males have a highly specialised tail, featuring only four feathers. The tail can be up to four times the length of the birdâs body. They fly exceptionally fast between the trees in the cloud forest, performing quick, unpredictable flight displays. I had to take many thousands of images to capture this very special moment.' â

'I went on an organised tour to see and photograph the lesser prairie-chicken on their breeding lek. A state representative and professional guide accompanied us.
