✨Strangers by Belle Burden✨ “There was something growing in me, an almost nihilistic desire to set flame to the remaining structures of my former life, to the very safety I clung to, to the fiction that I could depend on anyone other than myself for protection, to the idea that being quiet was the only way to be good.” ~Strangers, Belle Burden✨ Last night I had the honor of getting to hear @belleburden in conversation with her editor, Whitney Frick, at @littlebluepigeonbooks in Denver, and it was incredible! It feels weird to say that I’m proud of someone that I just met, but I am immensely proud of Belle for telling the truth about what happened in her marriage. For too long, women have been the victims of narratives that add shame to situations that aren’t our fault, or are silenced because of the fear of being judged as “difficult” or “hysterical” or “foolish”. For too long, we have kept quiet, and books like this are what will start to change those toxic narratives that we have dealt with for far too long. Telling the truth is how we heal. And while of the most devastating aspects of Belle’s story is the lack of answers as to why her husband left, I think that’s of the things that readers can relate to most. There is nothing quite like the pain of having the person you trusted most in the world turning into a stranger overnight, and Belle reminds us that we’re not alone in feeling that pain. I also found the level of grace and understanding Belle granted to her ex-husband really inspiring. This is the story of a marriage…of joys and love and mistakes that were made, of the deep pain caused by this level of betrayal, and the much-needed reminder that survival, and healing, is possible. If you’ve read this book, then you know how compelling Belle’s writing is, and I for one, am so glad she chose to bravely share her story with the world. Love stories are all around us but Strangers by @belleburden is a love story about the most important of all: love of self. Not selfish love but self-knowledge, honesty, “puzzle piece by puzzle piece” patience, and an unflinching look at ourselves. I didn’t know what to expect when starting Belle’s book. Now I don’t know what it to expect when putting it down because I will be carrying it around in my mind for days. Most of all, it’s a call for honesty, for the hard work of communicating, and for reclaiming every aspect of your story. Especially the stories you share with others, the stories that are woven into yours. The pieces that connect us to each other have contours that shape us. I’ve posted a lot about my book, my family, etc. but I have not posted about the work that is most important to me: representing children and teenagers in immigration proceedings with my law partner Nancy Bynum (@newfacesofdemocracy_ ) under the supervision of @safepassageproject.
