Woman’s Hour is 80! 🙌
Since our very first episode in 1946, Woman’s Hour has reflected, challenged and championed the lives of women across Britain.
And as we celebrate this very exciting milestone today, we have some familiar faces here, who are fans of the programme, to share why, even 80 years on, it’s still so important.
And the celebrations are only beginning!

We’ll be celebrating the rich history of our programme in front of a live audience. You won’t want to miss it.

Do you want to hear the first ever words spoken on Woman’s Hour? 🎙️
On 7 October 1946, Woman’s Hour was broadcast by the BBC for the very first time.
The original audio recording was lost years ago, but a copy of the first script still survives in the BBC Written Archives in Reading.
As we count down to our 80th birthday on 7 October 2026, we asked Nuala McGovern @bbcnuala to bring those opening words back to life.
Listen to how it all began... 🎧
And join us on Wednesday 7 October from 10am on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds for a special 80th anniversary edition of Woman’s Hour, celebrating eight decades of conversation, the women who have shaped the programme, and the listeners who have been part of the story 🎉
💚 What should the next 80 years of Woman’s Hour sound like?

How often do you put the needs of others before your own?🤔
That was a question we asked in the poll that Woman’s Hour commissioned to mark our 80th birthday last month 🎈
And one finding really stood out - over 90% of the 2,000 women surveyed reported putting others’ needs before their own at least sometimes, including nearly two thirds who say they do this often or always.
It’s not necessarily a bad thing to put others before yourself – but on today’s programme we considered the cost on an individual level. And to ask where that instinct comes from.
@itsanitarani discussed this with psychologist and author Dr Emma Hepburn @thepsychologymum writer, producer and activist @novareidofficial and Shani Orgad, who is Professor of Media and Communications at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
In this clip, Dr Emma Hepburn explains some of the reasons why many women feel that they have to put others before themselves.

‘Becoming a mum reopened my grief... I felt really isolated’ 💔
Entering motherhood without the support of your own mum can bring a unique kind of grief.
Whether that’s due to bereavement, estrangement or illness, new research from the charity Motherless Mothers shows that one in three new mothers become a mum without the support of their own.
@officialclaremcdonnell was joined on Woman’s Hour by @kennedyframpton, who has two daughters and lost her own mother when she was 22, and Adina Belloli, psychotherapist and co-founder of @themotherlessmothersuk . Her mum died when she was six months old.
They told Clare about the impact this has had on them and why they want to raise awareness of this kind of loss.
You can listen to the full discussion on @bbcsounds - it’s the Woman’s Hour episode from 2 November 🎧
And if you’ve been affected by any of the topics discussed, you can find help and support on BBC’s Action Line website.

‘I just couldn’t believe it... It was an incredibly dark day’
The BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg joined @officialclaremcdonnell on Woman’s Hour today and spoke about what she’s called the worst day of her career – when she found out that MP Jo Cox had been murdered in 2016.
Laura reported on the story for BBC News – but received the news of Cox’s death while trying to travel back to London from Sheffield. She described the deep shock it caused for her personally, and across Westminster.
It’s a memory she’s written about in her new book, Pay Attention, which delves into her own experience over two decades of reporting on politicians up close – with insights into women in political life and her own safety as a political journalist.
@bbclaurak has spent the last two decades covering British politics. She was the BBC’s first female political editor between 2015 and 2022 and now presents the flagship political interview programme Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.

‘The world wouldn’t be so tragic right now if women were more in charge’ 👀
Lessons in Chemistry author Bonnie Garmus joined @itsanitarani in the Woman’s Hour studio on Friday and explained how she thinks women are still held back in society.
@bonnie_garmus_author became a global publishing phenomenon when her debut novel Lessons in Chemistry was published, at the age of 64, and it’s since sold around nine million copies and been turned into an Emmy-winning TV series.
Speaking on Woman’s Hour, Bonnie shared why she wanted to write the book, which is set in the 1950s and 60s but inspired by her own experience of sexism in the workplace, and how it feels knowing how much the story has gripped women across the globe.
Bonnie was on the programme to discuss her new book, Peck & Peck 📚
