A controversial relief road plan has been approved despite hundreds of objections. The new road around Carrington in Trafford, first proposed more than a decade ago, will provide a new route to the M60 and reduce congestion in the village, the council said, as well as opening up the area for new housing. About 5,000 new homes could be built on land close to Manchester United’s training ground. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said Vladimir Putin is not invited to the G20 summit in Manchester. Asked whether the Russian president would be invited to the annual meeting, which the UK is hosting in November 2027, Burnham said “no” because of sanctions against the Kremlin. The UK has a longstanding policy not to have direct, bilateral engagement with Russian ministers since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. But US president Donald Trump has sparked controversy by inviting Putin to this year’s G20, which he will host in Miami in December. The Kremlin has not yet said whether Putin will attend. A building developer has been ordered to pay more than £45m to the government after fire safety defects were repaired in seven high-rise buildings. The buildings in Manchester, developed by Urban Splash between 2000 and 2008, were alleged to have serious defects discovered in inspections after the Grenfell Tower disaster. The extent of the defects was disputed but they have been fixed at a cost of more than £60m, with about £51.1m paid from the government’s Building Safety Fund established after the disaster. The buildings were not owned by Urban Splash at the time of the remediation work and no BSF money was paid to it. A spokesperson said the scale of the liability was “significant”. When Alex Ferguson announced he was joining Manchester United after eight trophy-laden years at Aberdeen, there was shock among fans. They had seen the legendary manager lead the Dons to three league titles, four Scottish Cups, the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. One told BBC Scotland News at the time: "I think he's making the wrong move, I think he will regret it." A small food shed set up on a driveway in Cheshire less than two years ago has grown into a community hub which helps about 200 people each week. Sutton Community Fridge was set up in December 2024 by Gayle Parks to tackle food waste and help families in the Macclesfield area access affordable food. The project collects surplus stock from supermarkets, charities and businesses that would otherwise be thrown away and makes it available to buy at a low price. A thief who was stealing a wall piece by piece was caught when a man put a tracking device in one of the stones. Matt Smith said people living near Rufford Old Hall in Lancashire, "were getting a bit miffed" with stones being taken from the 300-year-old boundary wall. So he put an Apple AirTag - a coin-sized tracking device people attack to keys or wallets in case they lose them - inside one of the stone. Police followed the trail to an address in Wigan, and earlier this month, a man pleaded guilty at Wigan Magistrates' Court to two counts of theft and one count of handling stolen goods.
