The School of Art History and University Collections welcomes artist and researcher Sylvia Grace Borda to St Andrews to talk about her work. Borda's major project EK Modernism (begun in 2005) is held in the Photographic Collection and is available for viewing. EK Modernism addressed how new towns like East Kilbride in Scotland were conceived as a one-stop solution for urban rejuvenation in the early 1950s. These centres were driven by modernist concepts in urban development and social planning. EK Modernism was designed to result both in the creation of an image archive of this New Modernist Town landscape as well as a conceptual photo series and a photobook. Booking required. For more information, and to book, visit: https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/sylvia-grace-borda-ek-modernism-and-pacific-tides/ 02 Nov 2026 Julia Smith, Questions of Authenticity: What makes a relic? 18 November 2026 School III, St Salvator's Quad: 4:00pm All welcome This paper explores the procedures which turn material objects into relics in the western Christian tradition. Emphasising the importance attached to methods of validating them, I shall outline the slow and gradual development of those procedures, primarily in the course of the Middle Ages. My argument will be accompanied by a selection of case studies drawn from the 7th to the 21st centuries. Julia Smith retired from the Chichele Professorship of Medieval History at the University of Oxford in 2025. She has spent much of the last two decades rethinking the origins and growth of relic cults in late antique and early medieval Christian practice. She also works with palaeographers and materials scientists to explore the practices of writing, wrapping and labelling associated with the curation of relics in the medieval Latin West. 30 Oct 2026 How can medieval Islamic art and history come alive beyond museums and universities? Join us for a special event exploring the intersection of medieval Islamic art history and digital games, with a focus on Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Wednesday 4 November, 4pm, School 3. This workshop aims to discuss how medieval Islamic art can travel beyond museums and universities, with focus on the case study of Assassin’s Creed: Mirage. It will feature a talk given by Dr. Glaire Anderson (Senior Lecturer in Islamic Art, University of Edinburgh), whose recent historical visualization work has helped shape the game’s rich setting and cultural detail and shortlisted by the University of Edinburgh as an exemplary impact case study. A discussion will follow, bringing medieval Islamic art history into dialogue with digital and game-based methodologies and asking what this might mean for the field’s public engagement. Participants include Dr Kirill Dmitriev (Arabic, St Andrews), Dr Emily Savage (St Andrews), Dr Billy Rough (St Andrews), and Dr Gonul Bozoglu (St Andrews). You are recommended to try out The Discovery Tour App: Medieval Baghdad: a free mobile experience that immerses players in 9th century Baghdad during the Abbasid Caliphate. Using the recreation of Baghdad from Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the Discovery Tour App allows users to explore this lost city, a capital for political, scientific, cultural, and commercial advances through Codex entries, engaging interactions, and mini games. https://www.ubisoft.com/en-us/game/assassins-creed/news/1el9bJb62hBMjVQInIb2iS/play-the-discovery-tour-app-medieval-baghdad Support for this event provided the School of Art History Research Impact Fund. 30 Oct 2026 Join us @universityofyork for a two day international conference concluding our Research Season Adrian Stokes, Inside Out. 'Rethinking the "East": A History of the Khanenko Museum's Islamic and Asian Collections' Dr Hanna Rudyk (Curator of Islamic art, The Khanenko Museum, Kyiv) The presentation will trace the history of the Islamic and Asian collections of the Khanenko Museum in Kyiv—a museum housing Ukraine’s major holdings of world art. It will follow the formation of Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko’s “Eastern” collection, its transformation into a public museum collection, significant losses and acquisitions during the Soviet period, and its subsequent development, culminating in the permanent gallery presented between 2006 and 2022. It will also address the colonial and Soviet frameworks through which the “East” was collected, classified, and displayed, and consider how museums might rethink the relationship between European and non-European heritage today. Hanna Rudyk (PhD in Art History, 2022) is a heritage historian and Deputy Director of the Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko National Museum of Arts (the Khanenko Museum) in Kyiv, Ukraine, where she has researched and curated the Islamic art collection since 2002. She was the curator of the museum’s most recent permanent Islamic art gallery (2006–2022), as well as a dozen temporary exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad. Her current research focuses on decolonial transformations in European and Ukrainian museums, with particular attention to dismantling colonial legacies in the display and public mediation of non-European art. 15 Oct 2026 Join us in Edinburgh on Friday 16 October for a conversation with @celiatupinamba and @olinda_tupinamba — DISRUPTING THE COLONIAL ARCHIVE. Both artists turn encounters with archives, collections and institutional histories into artistic and political interventions. Their work opens space for Indigenous self-representation and for new relationships between institutions and the peoples whose histories and heritage they hold. After last night’s news, we see this as a moment to gather ourselves and continue building these bridges for better futures. Presented with @uniofstandrews and @edinburghuniversity @imhs.standrews — Chaired by @jamillepinheirodias and @bbrulon — organised w @ponte.projects @emmalathamphillips 🗓 Fri 16 Oct, 3.15–5.15pm 📍 Edinburgh Futures Institute, Room 1.55 Free entry, no ticket needed 14 Oct 2026
