Together with our Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC), we’ve launched new exercise videos with Joe Wicks @thebodycoach to help children and young people prepare for surgery 👏💙
The videos combine fun, accessible workouts with practical advice on physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress management and overall wellbeing, giving families simple ways to stay active before and after treatment.
They provide families with trusted advice they can follow at home while children wait for surgery, supporting lifestyle changes that can benefit them before and after operations.
The resources form part of the RCoA’s Ready Steady Recover programme and CPOC and APAGBI national guidance, which help children and young people take positive steps to improve their health before an operation.
Increased physical activity and better lifestyle choices before surgery help reduce complications. This means patients recover quicker after surgery and get home sooner. It benefits patients, their families and hospitals, which are particularly busy in the winter months.
Dr Samantha Black, Consultant Paediatric and Perioperative Anaesthetist and Patient Information Lead at the RCoA, played a key role in helping develop and drive this collaboration: “With 37.6% of 10 to 11-year-olds in England classified as overweight or obese, surgery can be a teachable moment for children, young people, and families to encourage healthier habits as the NHS shifts from treating illness to preventing it,” she said.
“Exercise can improve recovery, support mental health and reduce screen time. By working with Joe Wicks, we hope to help families use surgical waiting lists as preparation lists, with simple activities that make movement part of everyday life.”
This exciting collaboration brings together Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, Joe Wicks The Body Coach, The Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC), and the @apagbi to help families turn waiting time into preparation time.

Really proud to share this collaboration today 💙
Last year, I was introduced to the incredible work being led by Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, the Royal College of Anaesthetists, the Centre for Perioperative Care and the Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists.
I learned more about the support being provided to children living with excess weight and obesity, helping them prepare for surgery while encouraging healthier habits that can benefit them long into the future.
One of the people I met was Dr Zoe Burton, who shared a simple but powerful message:
“We know that physical activity is a fundamental pillar of both physical and mental health. For all children, but particularly those living with excess weight, increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary time can have huge benefits, both now and in the future.”
I recently visited Sheffield to meet the team and see their work in action and together we created a series of short, fun and accessible videos designed to help children and their families feel more confident about getting active and building healthy habits before and after surgery.
It’s been a wonderful example of what can be achieved when healthcare professionals, patients and organisations come together with a shared goal: helping children become fitter, stronger and healthier for life.
I hope these videos are helpful for anyone that might need them 💙 You can find the whole series on my YouTube channel.

A fantastic day yesterday at the SALG Patient Safety Conference 2026! 💚. This year with a particular focus on patient safety in paediatric anaesthesia. The programme featured a brilliant trio of speakers from the APAGBI, sharing insights on key patient safety issues:
🩺 Dr Jonny Kenny – Fasting Guidelines and Variation Across Centres
💊 Dr Zoe Burton – Drug and Medication Errors
🏥 Dr Jonathan Smith – Cardiovascular Instability Events, including NAP7 findings
Other sessions explored preoperative assessment, perioperative airway and respiratory adverse events, transitions of care and handover risks, and the role of simulation in improving patient safety.
Thank you to SALG @rcoanews , @associationofanaesthetists and everyone involved in organising such a valuable day focused on making anaesthesia safer for our patients.

Our Council members have been hard at work showcasing the APAGBI at the ESPA Conference in Madrid 🇪🇸
Dr Sumit Das and Dr Karen Bartholomew were flying the flag for APAGBI on Day 1, with Dr Das chairing the opening session on Paediatric Organ Donation.
Dr Catalina Stendall has also been running workshops alongside the co-creators of the In Plane App, Dr Annabel Pearson and Dr Babette Clink.
Dr Lauren Brown represented us with poster presentation of the results of our Sip Til Send Survey. A huge thank you to all our members who took the time to respond and made this work possible.
It has been fantastic to see the APAGBI contribution across such a broad range of sessions, workshops and research at this year’s ESPA meeting.
