💡 Anne Byrn’s TEDxUGA 2026: Dark Mode talk explored the power recipes hold, inviting the audience to see food as a powerful lens into who we are and where we come from. Seven small courses showed off the big summer foods of this picturesque Appalachian area where tomatoes and greasy beans are cranking in the garden and cornbread is baked from Bloody Butcher (red) heirloom meal, which dates to the early 1800s in Virginia and West Virginia. Other diners had driven or flown in from 11 states to attend. My meal favorites, in no particular order, were carrot cake with buttermilk ice cream, sliced ripe tomatoes on a Duke’s mayo vinaigrette, and a non-alcoholic welcome drink - a green tomato shrub with a tiny sprig of mint flowers. The charming old farmhouse has belonged to Amy’s family for many generations, and it is perched on a hill in this land full of rushing creeks from recent rains, clouds that linger until dusk, and the noisiest but most wonderful symphony of tree frogs and crickets. En route I stopped in Malden, just south of Charleston, WV, to see how salt brine is extracted by @jqdsalt from 350 feet below ground and evaporated via solar. It felt old but new. Before the salt tour, travelers need to eat so we found Super Weenie at the Charleston farmer’s market and sampled not only the local specialty—a WV dog with chili sauce, onions, and creamy slaw—but the Chicago dog as well. Hands down, WV was the winner. Did you know that the @blenkoglasscompany is right off the highway, too, so made a quick stop in the showroom to snag a few deals on the timeless 384 water pitchers. This Blenko best-seller was named because it was the 4th design created in 1938 to fit in the narrow door shelf of the new electric ice box. From Nashville I had driven into WV via KY and the craftsy wonderful town of Berea, where I picked up a broom in advance of Halloween (hand-made by students from sorghum), and some greasy (green) beans from the farmer’s market. Met seed saving legend Bill Best, ate spoonbread at the Boone Tavern Hotel, and wondered why in the world did it take me so long to get to Berea? #newbook 200 likes · 36 comments · 09 Aug 2026 “To me, recipes are artifacts.” Earlier this month, @annebyrn brought demonstrations, stories and recipes from her new book Baking in the American South to #ArlingtonReads! An earthquake or two which we felt on the 14th floor of our Tokyo hotel. What I am learning from just a few days so far in Tokyo and Kyoto is we can learn much from the art and simple grace of this country. Their vibrant flowers and shrines. The lime green camphor trees that are given names. Their rituals, patience, gardens. Even picking up sashimi with right way with chopsticks. I’ve never done it right! Not eating while walking. Slippers in hotel rooms. Little things in life. Thank you, Japan. #japan #japanfood 125 likes · 14 comments · 22 Apr 2026 The Nashville ice storm has sidelined me. Still without power and just thawed out at a nearby hotel. But because much of the nation is hampered and halted by weather doesn’t mean we are forgetting how brave Minnesotans are standing up for our freedoms. I opened up my heart to Minneapolis by baking the beloved, humble hotdish in my gas grill what with being without power inside my home. Thank goodness for a gas stove I can light manually. And thank goodness for recipes that transport us out of our NOW and into someone else’s kitchen. Cooking with empathy, building community, conquering hate with love. All that with making hotdish in an icy kitchen down South. And everyday. Food connects us. Read about the recipe in my Substack newsletter today. It’s free. Link in my bio. #hotdish #tatertots #betweenthelayers @sarah_kieffer @nordicfoodgeek 142 likes · 9 comments · 03 Feb 2026 After my daughter’s fall wedding, the crazy holidays, and the recent chaos and tragedy in Minneapolis, I haven’t posted much recipe content. But this week’s newsletter felt different. It began with sharing a great lemon cake recipe and developed into something more—hope. The recipe is fantastic, a lemon and olive oil cake from Torchio restaurant in Chicago. I baked it in a springform, Bundt, and loaf pan. I glazed it and ate it morning, noon, and night. It fits January. And while I know there are countless olive oil cakes out there, this one is different. It’s the best. So I share the recipe in Between the Layers and some hope, too, that we can bake and find good in people. We can bake and share cake and learn about others. We can remember the tragic shooting death of Renee Nicole Good and the heartbreaking arson in the Jackson, Mississippi synagogue and never forget that love wins in the end. Remember when the pandemic seemed like the worst experience of our lives? Well, we’re in the middle of another bad one. So bake love. Speak up. You’re not being political. You’re being humane. We can learn from this, stop ICE’s cruelty, care for one another, and just move on. #lemonoliveoilcake #linkinbio #betweenthelayers 248 likes · 25 comments · 17 Jan 2026 It’s taken exactly one month for me to come up for air and post some pics from my daughter’s October wedding. Who said October is the best wedding month? Lovely weather but now NO ONE is coming home for Thanksgiving! Think about that, mothers of brides. But it was a fabulous wedding filled with friends, family, flowers, flower girls and a little brother, fancy clothes on people who don’t normally dress up, and frantic last-minute trips to the mall. All to make this one weekend to remember. Which we will. #motherofthebride #octoberwedding #nashvillewedding 413 likes · 50 comments · 25 Nov 2025 We had an incredible night at our Recipe for Success event Thursday, featuring three amazing FACS grads and celebrated cookbook authors - Anne Byrn, Ivy Odom and Vera Stewart! So I’m always amused when fall rolls around, temps dip, and baking comes back into the conversation. Like it’s been on vacation? For those of you who only bake in the fall, welcome back! Here are some of my favorite things to get you in the mood. And if you’re feeling lucky, may I also suggest you enter the Fall Baking Sweepstakes sponsored by Rodelle Kitchen, Schermer Pecans, and me. There’s a whopper of a grand prize - $850 of beautiful vanilla, cocoa, pecans, plus 4 of my books, and a KitchenAid mixer, too. Link is in my bio. Recipes in this carousel are on my Substack or from my books.
