The Regent’s Park, London @sullivanstrumpf Booth D29 These sosie, or twins, are the disquiet of the uncanny counterpart in another body, the natural longing for existential wholeness offset by the fear of being seen from another perspective that is outside of our control. A feeling all too familiar with to anyone who has presented themselves online.. It’s a reckoning with our new technology that allows us to see we exist in a system that is much bigger and more complex than we are, that is confronting us with a mirror image of who we’ve really become.. I’ve extended fleshy works from my last year’s ‘The Tenderness Series’ and given them mirrored twin sculptural forms, in the vibrant green of Verde Ming marble. Do stop by the booth if you’re in London! A feeling all too familiar with to anyone who has presented themselves online I think. Featured in Installation Contemporary is 'A Person of Substance (Life Size)', 2025, carved from Queensland Pearl marble. The work sets the jacket’s synthetic softness against the weight and permanence of stone. Emerging from Seton’s recent exhibition 'The Fabulists', the sculpture reflects on the desire for protection and comfort in an age shaped by disinformation, AI-generated imagery and environmental damage. The empty jacket becomes a figure of contradiction: warm and insulating, yet also tied to fast fashion, consumption and the uncertain realities we increasingly move through. Experience works by Alex Seton as part of Installation Contemporary and featured in Sullivan+Strumpf's booth, C02, throughout the weekend at Carriageworks. @alexseton_ @sydneycontemporary Pictured: Alex Seton, A Person of Substance (Life size), 2024, Queensland Pearl marble (Wakaman), cosmetic mica powder, 148 x 116 x 105 cm. Gorgeous images by @_laura_moore as one of the last sculptures completed in my Gladstone St studio, as I say farewell to it this week after 17 years. Booth CO2, @sullivanstrumpf 03 - 06 Sep 26 Carriageworks Gadigal/Sydney 02 Sep 2026 Alex Seton will present a new sculpture from his Soloist series at SydneyContemporary 2026. Register your interest in our presentation via the link in bio. This work takes the form of an anonymous hooded figure, positioned as an image of passive resistance. With the figure’s identity obscured, the sculpture considers the tension between anonymity and identification, and the experience of being observed. First sculpted in 2012 by the artist in response to the rise of surveillance state post 9/11, the work has more relevance than ever in the age of digital surveillance. The title ‘Soloist’ refers to the figure's role as the central performer within this act of being viewed. @alexseton_ @sydneycontemporary Booth C02, Sydney Contemporary 03 – 06 Sep 26 Carriageworks Gadigal/Sydney 26 Aug 2026 With an instinct for the unexpected and a lifelong connection to art, fashion and design, Eva Galambos brings a distinctive eye to this year’s Sydney Contemporary. The work ‘A Person of Substance (Life Size)’, 2025 is carved from Queensland Pearl marble and explores our desire for comfort and protection in a world shaped by AI, disinformation and environmental change, turning a familiar puffer jacket into an enduring symbol of contemporary anxieties. Seton is presented as part of Installations – Sydney Contemporary's program of 14 ambitious projects transforming Carriageworks and iconic locations across Sydney, curated by José Da Silva. . See it at Sydney Contemporary, 3–6 September at Carriageworks. Book your tickets via the link in bio. Pictured: Alex Seton, Portrait the Fabulistsin Studio. Courtesy Sullivan + Strumpf Alex Seton, A Person of Substance (Life Size), 2025 30 Jul 2026 Last year I created a work that was my take on Greek and Roman statuary ‘herm’ or ‘mercuriae’. Herm, from the word meaning ‘blocks of stone’ used the format of portrait head atop a rectangular prism of stone, with only the genitals carved in at the right height. These were placed at crossings and boundaries as symbols of fertility and protection. I became fascinated with herm when I was the Australian Fellow @amacademyrome on the Mordant Fellowship in 2022 @creative.australia , if only because the mostly broken off phalluses reflect the changing relationship with representation of sex over the centuries. I found this block of traditional Italian marble that sat in the rainforest of Mount Glorious in Queensland for the last twenty-five years, with extraordinary traces of the rainforest mud, vines and bug trails still on its surfaces. That got me thinking to the arrogance of humanity thinking it can control it nature. ‘Hubris’ is an excessive pride or dangerous over-confidence. In Greek tragedy it was used to describe human defiance or transgression against the gods and nature. So I carved a naturalistic fully erect penis from one of its faces; anonymous, prideful and insistent, with the decorative pubic hair of Michelangelo’s David, asserting itself from the stone block with all the hubris that the modern world assumes it can control nature with, rather than embrace and protect it. Originally I entered this piece in the 2025 Wynne Prize @artgalleryofnsw with the cotton hand towel over the erection as it was a family show, unsurprisingly wasn’t a finalist. I’ve hesitated to post images without the towel, unsure of insta’s ever changing rules, so enjoy the humour of the modesty towel.. for now! Sigh. This platform is too polite.
