the thing about TV is you can’t really make it on your own. you can try! but it’s definitely easier to find good people to make it with you. and yeah I’m doing that thing where there’s a different caption every photo. some could say I’m leaning into what instagram’s all about!!! thank you mark zuck for the opportunity
MARK FREELAND - people talk about mentors and champions a lot in this industry but I didn’t fully know what that looked like til I met Mark. he took this script on when no-one else would and believed in it more than me at times. every time he read a draft of something he’d text me lines that made him laugh & every year on january 3rd he’d send me an email going “this year is the year we make break clause”. listen, six of those times? he was wrong. but one time he wasn’t. thank god for mark and these tiny crushed cupcakes
MOLLY SEYMOUR - sometimes, you’ll have a general with a producer, nod as they tell you to “send anything that sparks, just a paragraph! a sentence! a word, even!”, leave their office and know you’ll never see them again. other times, you’ll go to bar italia to meet one of the most stylish people you’ve ever met and stay there for three hours talking about the sort of thing you both want to make. meeting molly was the rocket fuel our show needed to get off the ground. no-one cares, champions or nurtures more fiercely and I feel lucky as hell I’ll know her for life
ALICE SNEDDEN - listen at this point you’re switching off. you’re thinking OK GIRL. are you gonna reveal any of these people are nasty pieces of work who drove the project into the ground? I am! yeah! Alice was hell to work with from the get go and it didn’t get much easier. I’m KIDDING. of course. I feel nauseatingly lucky Alice signed on to direct. she’s stupidly funny, cared a LOT but never with ego and I learnt so much from working with her. I sort of think if you have any money to make things and you’re not just immediately giving it to Alice you’re a maniac. she didn’t let me hug her properly til the last day on set which I respected hugely

BTS eps 5 + 6 because our final two guys are out tonight on channel 4 at 10pm. thank you for watching, thank you for telling your friends, thank you for texting me strong opinions about the finale. I love this show and everyone who made it!!! let me know if you get bored of frogs, yeah?

one of my favourite days on set was when my sister and niece came and went completely method as “mum and child frolicking in park” (ep 6). getting my sister in the show felt important and full circle because to be completely honest there wasn’t a day I was making it I wasn’t thinking about her. three weeks after we got the greenlight for break clause Amy got diagnosed with breast cancer. and not like, the chillest version of it. it was obviously A Bit Of A Fucking Blow and all of a sudden making a tv show felt incredibly trivial and absurd. I didn’t care that ep two needed a B story, I cared that my sister was alive. but when the shock subsided and I’d learnt to work the switch between “needing an imagination for my job” and “needing to not have an imagination when it came to medicine and science”, break clause and its deadlines became - and I KNOW how this sounds - a lifeline. I wrote it on trains down to see her. I wrote it in bed while she slept. I wrote a lot of ep 5 from her chemo bay. there’s no comparing our one and a half years (imagine if I tried?) but me and her got a weird kick out of the synchronicity of it all - when I had 3 weeks per episode draft, she’d have 3 weeks per chemo cycle. the two months we filmed were her only two months break in treatment. our trailer literally dropped the MINUTE she finished her 20th and final chemo round - I watched it on shaky hospital 4g before she rang the bell like they do in films. all of this is to say a few things: number one - in breast cancer awareness month of all months - check your boobs. anything weird get it checked. number two - cancer is very scary and all-consuming but one day you’ll be trying to work out how to ask your newly bald sister if you can have her dyson airwrap and it will actually all feel very very funny. number three - art and making something from nothing is a balm and a privilege we need to protect and I don’t think I would’ve got through last year without it. number four - my sister is a fucking legend and I couldn’t be more proud of her and number five can you believe my niece’s little face

BTS eps 3 + 4 because they’re out on channel 4 tonight, 10pm! some fun trivia from these two episodes? sure! it’s my mum and dad’s real motorhome. our camera trainee mojan stood in for lara one day because she happened to be her exact same size and sort of had the exact same perfect hair? bus shot at the end of ep 3 was the last thing we filmed and mostly it’s crew sat behind them - also that day on the way to set mark the driver put on “the love I lost” and we loved it so much it’s now the song that plays in the ep #handicam #canyoutellIhadahandicam

I feel so many things but mostly what I feel is so, so lucky. It is completely wild I get to do this as a job - it sort of feels like sitting at the kids table always but working really really hard and I poured every single thing I had into this show. we had the best six weeks filming in manchester last year and thank god for olly & alice who taught me the exact amount of serious to take things (and for only allowing me to compliment them over text, never in person). they’re incredible. I’m deeply grateful to ligeia, hannah, mark, molly, josh, riz, charlie, nathan, sam, anna, rachel, serena, joe, stepan, lucy, lara, samuel + our entire beautiful cast and crew
I love writing, I love romcoms, I love channel 4, I love love, man!!!! what can I say!!!!!
(& thank god for theo. he’s not ben and I’m not lil but he does make me want to write this kinda thing)

On this week's episode I'm joined by Jess Bray, creator of the new Channel 4 rom-com Break Clause, and writer, actor (and best fried) Nathan Foad.
We chat about Jess and Nathan's origin stories before getting into Break Clause's journey to the small screen.
We chat about writers rooms, writing for SNL UK, "re-writing" the pilot, stress-testing the premise, and a whole lot more.
Break Clause sees Channel 4 revisit the rom-com genre and follows Ben (Samuel Bottomley) and Lil (Lara Ricote) as they navigate their breakup whilst stuck in the same flat… Their relationship is over, but their tenancy isn’t.
The six-part series is led by Lara and Samuel and hosts an incredible array of comedy stars in its ensemble, from SNL UK’s Jack Shep and Hammed Animashaun to Charly Clive (Rooster) and Cat Cohen (Sentimental Value).
