Introducing the 30 greatest living American songwriters, as chosen by The New York Times Magazine and more than 250 music insiders.
We sifted through more than 700 nominees submitted by more than 250 music insiders, and our critics spent weeks debating what constitutes greatness in music.
This list is the result — 30 artists @nytmag sees as the beating heart of American song. From @taylorswift to @bobdylan to @willienelsonofficial and more, their music has defined what half a century of national life sounds like, and that sound has traveled the world as perhaps the country's most potent and influential export.

The Academy Award-winning filmmaker Martin McDonagh makes darkly funny and violent films, including “In Bruges,” “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” He joined David Marchese to talk about his career and his latest movie, “Wild Horse Nine,” starring John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as CIA agents.
In their conversation, they delved into the role of art in our lives. They also covered McDonagh’s early experience with punk rock, the way Hollywood portrays male friendship, how he handles critiques of his work and more. Comment “McDonagh” and we will DM you a link to watch the episode. You can also find it at the link in our bio.

Jaron Alexander says he didn’t come to the town of Ingram to help deport his neighbors. The town was where he started his law-enforcement career; Ingram’s Police Department took him back just when its new chief was under pressure from the City Council to do more. Alexander told the chief that a deal with ICE could help Ingram’s department grow.
In September 2025, ICE announced new incentives for a partnership program; its most aggressive form, the so-called task force model, enlists local police officers as deputy immigration agents. Incentives included a $100,000 vehicle stipend, a $7,500 equipment stipend for every participating officer, quarterly performance bonuses and funding to help cover officer salaries and overtime.
Alexander soon became the local face of the national crackdown. Alexander and Ingram’s other patrol officer made more stops in two months than the department had made in the entire previous year. Within a year, they would hand over the equivalent of 10 percent of Ingram to ICE.

Daniel Duane’s father taught him to climb in Yosemite National Park. It’s also where he made a mistake that nearly cost Daniel his life.
Returning to Yosemite for the first time since his father's death, Duane wanted to feel the happiness that he once felt there with his father, reinhabit the memory of that last terrible moment and seek forgiveness for having never climbed with his dad again.

In the four years since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, triggering a near-total ban on abortion in Idaho, OB-GYNs have been fleeing the state in extraordinary numbers.
The impact has rippled across the state. Due to staffing shortages, hospitals in rural areas have shuttered their labor and delivery wards. In more populated areas, OB-GYNs are so overloaded that it can take nine months to secure an appointment for an annual exam.
Increasingly, women facing life-threatening complications are flown out of state for treatment that OB-GYNs in Idaho are not allowed to administer, hospital administrators say.
The effect of what some are calling a generational loss of doctors is already clear: By banning abortion, Idaho has become a more dangerous place to give birth.
But there's a chance the law could change when Idaho voters decide on a referendum in November that would restore abortion rights until fetal viability — the standard that had been set in Roe. Read more at the link in bio. Photos by @theatraff.

In the upcoming 2026 elections, Democrats have hopes of winning big in Texas. While the Senate candidate James Talarico has gotten most of the attention, another Democrat, Gina Hinojosa, has looked surprisingly competitive against the most powerful politician in the state: Gov. Greg Abbott, the Republican running for a fourth term.
Hinojosa is a Texas state legislator who represents parts of Austin. Her political rise began on her local school board, where she was inspired to run for the State Legislature because of cuts to public school funding under Abbott. Education has become one of her signature issues. She is also focusing on affordability and data centers as she campaigns to win over disaffected MAGA voters.
She spoke with @lulugnavarro about why she is running — and why she might win — on “The Interview.” Comment “Hinojosa” and we will DM you a link to watch the episode. You can also find it at the link in our bio.

Sophie Haigney spent much of the spring and summer talking to people experimenting at the fringes of nutrition, following all sorts of unusual diets.
Some avoided specific vitamins, or disavowed seed oils, or believed that vegetables were unhealthy. Some swore by organ meats, some by cane sugar. Some snacked on raw chicken or took large doses of supplements.
The term “dark nutrition” doesn’t refer to a specific diet; it’s a style of thinking about food and health. Its adherents had concluded that the usual sources of authority — doctors, public health officials, food executives, pharmaceutical corporations — could not be trusted.
The old order that told us to eat our vegetables was discarded, and new ideas, from podcasts and Instagram accounts and message boards, filled the void.

Nikole Hannah-Jones recently wrote an essay in The New York Times Magazine about a decision she and her husband made about their daughter’s education, hoping to challenge New York City’s segregated school system.
In her 23-year career as a journalist and Pulitzer Prize winner, she said she had never written a piece as personal and vulnerable as her article, “In Fighting For Every Child, Did I Betray My Own?” She discussed the piece and readers' responses with Patrick Healy, an assistant managing editor at The New York Times.

During the press tour for “Jamón Jamón,” and for years afterward, male journalists would leer at Penélope Cruz. She wanted to avoid being typecast, so she decided to reject roles that required her to bare her body. “It was really confusing, and there were a lot of people who were like, Are you crazy?” she told Marcela Valdes.
People predicted that she was ruining her future. Since then, she’s won three Goya Awards (Spain’s equivalent of the Oscars), been nominated for four Academy Awards and won the Oscar for best supporting actress in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
This year, Cruz appears in three starkly different parts that showcase her virtuosity. In this summer’s “The Invite,” she displays cool comic timing and a gift for deadpan delivery. In Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s historical drama “La Bola Negra,” she sings and dances with aplomb. And in Florian Zeller’s upcoming thriller “Bunker,” she smolders as a book editor losing faith in her famous husband.

The four members of U2 still occupy the same positions they did when they first played together in suburban Dublin 50 years ago. On Nov. 13, they will release “Carnaval De Luz,” their first full-length album of new material since 2017.
What drives them to keep making music? Bono and the Edge joined “The Interview” to talk about what keeps @U2 going. They also delved into their early years together, the political situation in the U.S., how faith informs their work and more. Comment “U2” and we will DM you a link to watch the in-depth interview.
