It's trick or treat season. Here are a few pics of my senior dogs doing "tricks", and some happy dancing when they get their treats.

I have a tough financial decision to make. I took Hubbard in to see the ophthalmologist, to find out if he's a candidate for cataract surgery to restore his sight. Luckily, he is. But here's the catch. The doctor said he's had these cataracts for years and years and the dumbed down version that I could understand is it makes his eyes weaker. The surgery is still an option, but the success rates are at 70% instead of the 90% expected for most dogs.
The surgery isn't cheap, and it's gone up $1200 from the last time I took Cat the dog in for it. I'm notoriously bad with money, so I'll probably go for it. But at the same time, I need to be somewhat practical since I'm living off of my retirement.

I threw in a couple other pics from the last several days, and the last one is a video of Alice circumventing the footstool iI put in a chair to keep him out. (He has his own chair that he's ruined, so I'd like to keep this one for myself. ). I shouldn't be surprised by his antics, but somehow I always am.
I see where a lot of these comments are going, and no I don't want to do a fundraiser, or have people donate. the decision to keep so many senior dogs is mine and they're my responsibility. But as i've said in the past, i'm lucky enough sometimes to get promotions for products i believe in, and that helps offset these costs.

During the week, if I want to get to bed at ten I have to start the process at 9 to get all the dogs taken care of. One dog takes longer than the others....
Most dogs jump up and run to the door when you ask them, 'do you wanna go potty?' Alice is not most dogs.
I know i'm breathing pretty hard in this video, but i've got Harriet in one hand and my phone in the other. Also, i'm about a hundred years old, and you should try sliding a sixty five pound sack of potatoes across your entire house and see how hard it is. No, that would be too easy because the potatoes would roll. How about a sixty five pound sack of mashed potatoes? That would be more accurate.
For every time I say one of the other dogs' names, I say Alice's at least 10 times. If I had a spouse I'm sure they would hear me mumbling the name in my sleep and think I was having an affair. The urgency in which I say the name could be misconstrued.
I like the way at the end he jumps up, shakes it off, and then turns back to look at me as if to say, 'well, are you coming? I don't have all night.'

The idea was to get a picture of all ten dogs, Pool Boy the cat and Betty, the chicken. (Yes, i'm leaving out Bikini the pig, but i'm saving that for the holiday Pic. Also, every time I put Bikini in a picture, it ages me a few years, and i'm running out of years to age. )
Anyway... that was the plan. But Pool Boy refused to be in the picture, Betty the chicken just looks like a fuzzy pillow on Wallace's back, and Sue Ellen appears to be passed out on the side.
So it didn't turn out the way i planned, but i'm hoping it'll at least be one of the better pictures you see today of ten dogs and a chicken. (Or a fuzzy pillow for all you can tell.)
Left to right, top to bottom...
Sue Ellen, Sturgill, Harriet, Ortha, Couscous, Moira,
Allister, Thurmond, Hubbard, Betty the chicken and Wallace.

This weekend in a few slides.
(Don't worry, when they actually get close to Frank, they stop chasing. )

Just a few fun facts about each of my senior rescues. They all have such varying personalities, and each one brings something special to the group. The one thing they all seem to have in common is their love for @thefarmersdog . You can see why they love it so much by clicking on the link in my bio and get fifty percent off your first box.

A few pics from this past week and looking through them I realized a lot of them show different friendships within the group. Except for the last one, which is just alice hanging out in the dining room. But I guess that could also represent a friendship, alice's deep friendship with dining. Have a great week.

I think the kids refer to this as a photo dump. Actually, i'm so out of touch, they probably call it something else now. Nothing really new to talk about, just settling in with Hubbard and very confused as to how he ended up at the shelter 10 times. It makes no sense he's such a great dog. But I think a lot of things in this world don't make any sense right now. Have a great weekend. Adopt a senior pet and make both of your lives better.

After last week's hospital stay, it became obvious I should probably slow down the senior adoption project that i've been at for almost fifteen years. I''m getting older (sixty two)and I shouldn't take my health for granted. And let's face it, it's a lot for one person. Slowing down is what an intelligent and practical person would do. Fortunately I'm neither one of those things. So...meet my new dog Hubbard. He's about 11 years old and he's blind. Hubbard had been returned to the shelter ten times. After a few days, I know this dog, and that was in no way a reflection of him. He is perfection.
I want the focus of this post to be about giving blind dogs, a chance. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing Hubbard is. Within a few hours. Hubbard mastered going out the doggy door. By the next day he had mapped out the backyard (almost an acre) and he found his way back in through the doggy door. He comes when I call him, he's integrated himself with the other animals, he's potty trained and he sleeps through the night. Once he's settled in I'll take him to the ophthalmologist to see if his eyesight can be restored to make his life better. But if that's not possible, what Hubbard already gives back to my world will not be diminished. I'm in awe of him
So yes, I adopted another senior before my antibiotics were even finished. But in my defense (this next part is called "rationalization") I don't want to brag, but what I lack in practicality and intelligence is completely made up for in my ability to rationalize almost any situation. After last week's hospital stay, I got the name of a few people that work at my vet that are willing to house/dog sit .It's perfect! They know the dogs, they work at the vet and caring for seniors is already part of what they do.So i'm not giving up senior dog adoption just yet. And if the Pool Boy tries to kill me again, now i've got a backup plan.

Usually when I haven't posted in a while it's because one of the animals has been sick, or worse, passed away. But this time, that animal was me. I'm not writing from the grave, so it was just an illness, but it did involve emergency surgery, an overnight stay in the hospital and lots and lots of IV antibiotics. I know you come here for the pets so I'll keep the personal stuff to a minimum. It appears to have been a bite on my hand that quickly traveled up my arm. I'm suspecting a little black kitten named Pool Boy, but I won't know for certain until the blood cultures come back. But you have to admit My Pool Boy Tried to Kill Me would make for a great movie of the week on the lifetime channel. Any Hollywood producers out there? Give me a call ......
Here's a few pics I took last week when I wasn't napping or bitching about my at home antibiotic regimen.
