And the crowd goes wild! 🙌
Once again, @usnews has named UC Berkeley the #1 public university (tied). Berkeley has been at the top of the rankings throughout much of the 21st century.
For 2027, Berkeley has 51 top-tier rankings. Of those, 43 were programs in five specific academic disciplines: business, economics, computer science, engineering and psychology. In all, 29 programs in those disciplines placed in the top five nationwide, and 38 in the top 10.
The new ranking follows recent reports by @forbes, @pitchbookdata, and others that have affirmed Berkeley’s status among elite universities nationwide and worldwide.

Number one university for startups, four years in a row.
UC Berkeley tops PitchBook’s 2026 University Rankings for the most venture-backed startups founded by undergrad alumni.
Behind the numbers are thousands of people, over 100 programs and dozens of places across campus that turn world-class research into movements, innovations and industries that benefit society.
Meet real Berkeley-built startups changing the world with support from UC Berkeley’s Innovation & Entrepreneurship ecosystem:
🩺 Bringing 200-year-old tech into the AI age. Eko Health reimagined the stethoscope, earning a spot on the TIME Best Invention list and a Mayo Clinic partnership.
🍸1 makeup compact. 9 drugs tested. 5 minutes. Founder Yasha Zink (BS Business, ‘26) created SipDisk, a discreet drink-spiking detector designed to fit in a purse.
🌐 Accessible cross-border payments. Fintech company Xendit made transactions simple, secure and seamless across Southeast Asia.
⏰ Wildfires don’t wait. That’s why Interlinked’s cofounders built an AI intelligence and response platform that helps fight fires in real time.
Here’s to 30 years of ecosystem-building and all the brilliant thinkers across Berkeley turning ideas into startups, nonprofits and enterprises that change the world.

Let’s face it: A lot of us are overwhelmed. The endless notifications, the stuff we keep but never use, the mountains of food waste — it’s too much.
Berkeley Voices is a podcast that highlights UC Berkeley’s advances in teaching and research, sparking curiosity about how we live and the histories that shape us. In season three, we’ll meet innovators rethinking how we live, focus and make space for what counts.
New episodes come out at the beginning of each month from November through April. You can follow Berkeley Voices wherever you find your podcasts.

Scientists are getting UC Berkeley’s newest space telescope ready for launch. 💫
With funding from NASA, the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is one of a long string of satellites and space missions designed, built and operated at the campus’s Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL).
The COSI mission, led by John Tomsick, SSL associate director for astrophysics and exoplanets, is designed to scan the skies for gamma rays. By mapping gamma rays in the Milky Way Galaxy, Tomsick and his team hope to understand why there are more positrons around than people thought, and answer questions about the origin of the chemical elements in our galaxy — elements critical to the formation of Earth.
Through internships and fellowships, SSL is also training a new generation of space scientists and engineers poised to make the next great cosmic discoveries.

Challenging 20 years of conventional wisdom about hula hooping? Leave it to UC Berkeley engineers!
The physics behind the gym-class staple is so complicated that scientists have spent decades trying to understand how the hula hoop defies gravity.
Naturally, that’s where a team led by Professor Oliver O’Reilly came in.
According to past studies, two distinct sets of movements, one back-and-forth and the other a vertical bounce, separately controlled the hoop’s orbit around the body and its up-down wobble.
But the Berkeley team’s analysis revealed that the orbit and wobble were inextricably connected — they couldn’t be divided into two clean categories because one set of movements impacted the other.
They used an innovative method to analyze motion-tracking data — and their findings suggest a better way to model complex mechanical systems like the hula hoop’s twirl, which could be useful in fields like physical rehabilitation and robotics.
O’Reilly’s collaborators include structural engineering postdoctoral researcher Chrystal Chern and recent Berkeley Ph.D. Theresa Honein, now an assistant professor at the American University of Beirut.

From $720 and a makeshift lab in Berkeley to a $2.6B global biotech leader.
When UC Berkeley alumni Alice Schwartz (BA Biochemistry, ‘49) and David Schwartz (BS Chemistry, ‘51) founded Bio-Rad Laboratories in 1952, they built the foundation for modern life science and clinical diagnostics.
75 years later, their impact reaches far beyond the lab—powering breakthroughs that advance science and save lives.

"I'm a 4th year studying civil engineering at UC Berkeley. I gained a passion for oil painting throughout my last year in high school and I started selling paintings during my first year in university. Important campus subjects such as Sather Gate are places that students can come together and converse, and introducing art into the conversation allows us to further appreciate beauty that surrounds us. UC Berkeley has very in-depth classes throughout the engineering department and I'm grateful to grow as an engineer while being an artist. Berkeley is so full of life and I believe art will always enhance our experiences throughout campus." - Jake M. | Civil Engineering | Class of 2027

Now that Taylor Waddell has earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, he is rapidly working toward his doctorate in the field of BART-themed Halloween costume studies.
We are ready to bestow a diploma on this postdoc, posthaste!
We have seen photos Waddell’s previous Halloween BART fare gate costume floating around on social media since he debuted it in 2024. Then we ran into him at BART Prom earlier this year and heard he was toying with the idea of turning our new fare gates into a costume this Halloween.
We couldn’t wait to see what Waddell cooked up, and he delivered.
#Watch the video now and tag us in your own posts featuring BART-themed costumes. And don’t worry if they don’t have the same bells and whistles — it’s about sharing your love of transit and introducing a bit of whimsy into Spooky Season.

“Capitalism was under construction from about 1500 to about 1800,” says Professor Trevor Jackson. “It’s easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism.”
Jackson’s recent book, The Insatiable Machine: How Capitalism Conquered the World, details this complex history. In it, the UC Berkeley economic historian underscores that capitalism’s rise was not an inevitable or even intentional outcome, and that radical change is more “thinkable and possible than we realize.”
Watch Jackson gives us a snapshot of the pivotal moments that shaped the evolution of capitalism — moments that are often rife with precipitous inequality, bloodshed and environmental destruction.
