BTS are back. What an honor to have all seven members reunite on the Tonight Show for their big comeback. It was such an exciting day to finally have RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook back on the show, especially as one of the very first appearances in the world back as a group.
Over the last several years, I read countless comments from ARMY who were hoping for a complete blue wall photo. Not just anticipating the literal photo, but what it would mean more symbolically. OT7. After all these years, the wait is finally over.
It was such a busy day for the group’s appearance. They were booked solid, starting with a very early morning performances of “2.0” and “Swim.” Then back at 30 Rock for a “fan surprise,” to filming with our digital team, and then finally the big show itself, with three interview segments.
When we first met to do the blue wall photos, I welcomed the members and said how excited I was to have them all back on the show. I always try to greet guests before we make these photos. It’s my way of trying to convey that I want to take care of them.
RM surprised me by making a kind comment in return. I should say it was of note because normally it’s me chatting up talent to try and make them feel comfortable, and now it was happening in reverse. I mention this detail because it stood out as an example of effortless kindness ond reciprocity, and in turn leadership, from RM. This exchange set the dynamic for the shoot.
We did a few quick poses. Then, just before the show, I caught the group for two more photos, including this one.
Big congratulations to BTS for their return and for ARIRANG, which has debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. An incredible achievement. And all joy and love to ARMY as well, I am so happy for you. You have waited so long for this moment.
Thank you so much to all the members for their time and graciousness. I hope everyone will be back one day. When that day comes, we’ll do another blue wall photo.

Here’s to 2024.
What I’m struck by looking back on this year is the gratitude to be part of so many incredible teams and so many exceptional partners. From the Tonight Show to festival teams and workshops to tours, I’m beyond grateful to work with the best. I feel so lucky to get to learn from and be inspired by everyone in all these different worlds.
Here’s to all the friends, the fun and the failures. Here’s to new challenges, lessons and hope in the new year.

Earlier this year, the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon celebrated its 10th year on the air.
This is a name tag from a press event I photographed as part of the various celebrations for this milestone. I've kept this magnetic name tag on my fridge ever since that event.
The people who work on this show are the best. Night after night, week after week, I'm continually amazed at the work that goes into putting on this show. But I'm never surprised; it's far from a miracle. It's simply what happens when everyone involved, top to bottom, is so very good at their job. Miracles happen with luck. Quality and consistency are the products of a lot of talent and hard work.
I've always intended to photograph this name tag in front of the marquee at 30 Rock. Today wasn't any special occasion, but maybe that's the point. I'm grateful to work with all the stars that make this show possible.

Last night, we had @chefanthony_ballatosnyc of the renowned Emilio’s Ballato on to show @jimmyfallon how to make his family’s classic spaghetti pomodoro. Chef Anthony sprinkled gems of cooking instruction in this demo and even taught Jimmy how to flip his spaghetti as it finished in the pan.
At the end of the segment, Jimmy remarked on the many photos gracing the walls of Emilio’s, a signature of the NYC institution, and suggested that they take a photo together that maybe could hang in the restaurant.
The day before, segment producer for Chef Anthony’s appearance, the amazing @zelbell31, asked if I would be comfortable stepping in to take a photo. Now, normally a fair part of my job is spent trying *not* to be on camera and generally be invisible. But I said yes.
Normally, if I were to be in front of a camera during filming, something has gone terribly wrong. Cue the Simpson meme with Ralph Wiggum saying, “I’m in danger.” But as I told Zel, I feel like its good to do things that feel scary or uncomfortable. It is how we learn and grow.
We’d rehearsed the blocking and thanks to our incredible stage manager @niclana, I had a mark on the studio floor to hit. During rehearsal, this was a posed shot. Easy.
As you can see during the actual show, Jimmy suggests they flip their spaghetti for an action shot. Thankfully, I’d changed to shooting at high speed at 20fps in anticipation of this moment.
One way I think of my role is that my job is to create options. My partner @cee_shore’s job as the show’s photo editor is to curate those thousands of photos and to choose the images that highlight every act. The expressions, the moments, the gestures and so forth that tell the story for each guest’s appearance, distilled down to their essence.
I love Clay’s select for this moment that serves as a bumper for the segment. The action on display, Jimmy’s expression of excitement flipping his spaghetti, Chef Anthony’s grin. Bonus that this moment also marks my first on-screen cameo on the show to make it even more special.
Thanks to Zel, Nicka, Clay, Jimmy and everyone else who made this moment as easy as possible for someone used to being behind the camera.

The incredible @angele_vl. This was such a stunning performance with exquisite choreography, one of my favorite performances in recent memory. Angéle is a star.
This was a one shot steadicam shoot for broadcast that required executing very intricate camerawork in movements and focal length to capture the choreo as intended. With dancers moving in and out of frame and some elements meant to be out of frame, it meant the camera work had to be just as precise as the dancers, anticipating and responding to their movements.
Being entirely steadi meant that I could play up near the operator. It requires a lot of trust from camera operator and their utility. Or forgiveness. Maybe a little of both.
Like everything on a TV show, it really is a lot easier and “safer” without a set/unit stills photographer on the floor. This is especially true with a performance like this, where the camera op is in close for specific angels, protecting the dancer’s moments that should be hidden from view, precise alignments with the dancers and so forth.
There are a lot of fluid adjustments the camera op is making constantly to ensure this execution, judging their distance, framing, position and next movements. I was doing the same, with both the camera op Dan and Angèle as dual subjects.
When I’m working next to the studio cameras, it’s always when they’re stationary. This performance was a dance.
Thanks to Dan and Adrian (and mostly Adrian for not professionally shoving me into next week). These images would not be possible without their trust and teamwork on the floor to allow for these images to be made.

When I think of Italy, I think of you. Of the train from Firenze, spilling through yellow fields and towns, past Carrara, until the breathless draw of tunnel views opening to the sea. Of secret beaches, sunsets and then blue hour along the harbor. Of all these years past, to be so different and still the same, golden and brilliant, like the late dawn rushing over the hills to catch up with the tide.
