Een debutant is altijd een kleine gok. Je weet nog niet of een schrijver je weet mee te slepen, of dat het verhaal onderweg ergens blijft steken. Bij Jonas Smits pakte die gok voor mij goed uit. De wraak van de Zamelaar is een spannend en verrassend debuut waarin een gewone dierenwinkel het begin blijkt van een avontuur vol magie, geheimen en pratende dieren. Wanneer Tibbe ontdekt dat de dierenwinkel naast zijn nieuwe huis een geheim lijkt te verbergen, komt hij terecht in een mysterie dat groter is dan hij had verwacht. Achter de beslagen ramen fluisteren de dieren over de Zamelaar, een mysterieuze figuur met een angstaanjagend plan. Samen met het eigenwijze konijn Roe en de raadselachtige Ferrie gaat Tibbe op zoek naar antwoorden. Wat speelt zich af in de dierenwinkel? En wie is de Zamelaar? Terwijl Tibbe steeds dichter bij de waarheid komt, lijkt iemand er alles aan te doen om het geheim verborgen te houden. Jonas Smits is een auteur die houdt van de verhalen van Roald Dahl en Paul Biegel. Dat is in dit boek goed te merken. Hij weet een wereld neer te zetten die voor kinderen herkenbaar begint, maar waarin magie en het onverklaarbare al snel een vanzelfsprekende plek krijgen. Dat Tibbe ’s nachts krimpt, met gemak een konijnenhol in kan en vervolgens overleg voert met een konijn en een haas, voelt daardoor helemaal niet vreemd. Het past binnen de wereld die Smits neerzet. Het verhaal heeft een prettig tempo. Er gebeurt steeds iets, maar Smits neemt ook de tijd om de wereld en de personages neer te zetten. De spanning wordt stap voor stap opgebouwd en informatie wordt bewust achtergehouden. Daardoor blijf je je afvragen wat er precies in de dierenwinkel gebeurt en wie er te vertrouwen is. So excited to finally share ‘De Wraak van de Zamelaar’ (Revenge of the Collector)📚 is out now in the Netherlands and Belgium! This wonderfully dark and mysterious debut novel by Jonas Smits was such a fun world to illustrate. I had the chance to create the cover, six full-color interior spreads, endpapers, and a few other pieces throughout the book. I loved leaning into the slightly eerie, nostalgic feeling of the story, that childhood sense that something strange and magical might be hiding right next door. Huge congratulations to Jonas on his debut, and a big thank you to Erik and everyone at Billy Bones for such a fantastic collaboration. I’m really proud of how this one came together!
