“The P5 of the United Nations must cease to exist in its current form,” says Varsha Gandikota-Nellutla, executive secretary of The Hague Group.
Nearly 40 countries, led by South Africa and Malaysia, are trying reform the UN to hold Israel to account over its genocide in Gaza.
Gandikota-Nellutla says the ability of the five permanent Security Council members to veto any UN resolution is akin to imperial bullying.
“The UN Security Council is held up with vetoes, which essentially act against a majority of humanity.”
She says The Hague Group is utilizing the same techniques used in anti-apartheid movements against South Africa to put external pressure on Israel and enact change.

AI data centers are threatening this historic Native American lake.
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe has worked hard to protect its namesake lake. They have fought court battles and repopulated native fish species, but now Pyramid Lake is under threat from AI data centers popping up in the Nevada desert.
The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe knows what can happen if it doesn’t protect its water rights. Lake Winnemucca used to be filled with water 100 years ago. It’s now a dry lake bed. Now, the tribe wants to make sure Pyramid Lake doesn’t share the same fate.

Steven Wadsworth, chairman of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, says that if people really want to stop the rapid expansion of data centers, they need to put their phones down.
Northern Nevada has become a hub for AI data centers from big tech companies like Google and Microsoft, and the tribe is worried about the impact they will have on local water resources.
“As the population keeps growing, we need more data centers,” Steven said. “These are the direct result of people.”
