It returns every 2 to 7 years, and this one has already battered our coasts, flooding neighborhoods, damaging infrastructure, and eroding beaches—and forecasters warn the worst may still be ahead. Seawalls can protect coastal development in the short term, but they ultimately destroy the beach. It’s time to modernize emergency permitting with firm removal dates, funding for restoration, and long-term plans that work with nature instead of against it. The ocean is not our enemy, and the state of our beaches does not have to be a state of emergency. Swipe to learn more. This is an attempt by the administration to force through new offshore oil drilling, dangerous and disruptive rocket launches, and other industrial developments without a say by Californians. California has a 50-year record of excellent coastal protection and has received high praise from NOAA for decades. Taking away California’s voice on federal projects would threaten public safety and beach access, harm coastal communities and businesses, and eliminate meaningful input from Californians on decisions affecting their coast. This unprecedented action should put other states on guard. Surfrider strongly opposes any attempt to weaken California’s coastal protections, and calls on NOAA to drop this unjustified action. Stay tuned — we will need your voice soon to tell NOAA we oppose this attack.
