1942. With the war in full swing, paper supplies dwindling, and book production slowing down, Ernest Roker, the managing editor of the British publishing house Brockhampton Press, hit upon a rather clever idea. At the time, a photojournalistic magazine named Picture Post was all the rage. Once its pages were trimmed to size, 3x6-inch offcuts of paper were usually destined for the bin. Roker spotted an opportunity to use these scraps to create a series of mini-books for children.
Brockhampton Press was an imprint of Hodder & Stoughton. 1942 was also the year Enid Blyton’s Famous Five made their debut under the Hodder & Stoughton banner. Blyton was commissioned to pen the stories for Roker’s mini-book project, with Olive Openshaw brought on board for the illustrations.
And so, the Mary Mouse series was born. Each page featured two illustrations with accompanying text below. These budget-friendly editions were stapled together with a distinctive red cloth spine and sold for a mere shilling.
They proved so popular that twenty-three Mary Mouse titles were published up until 1964. Another series featuring a character named Clicky followed suit. Brockhampton also went on to publish Blyton’s Secret Seven and subsequent Famous Five titles.
Just last week, I happened upon a couple of books from the Mary Mouse and Clicky series in a secondhand bookshop. The prices printed on them were 1/- Net and 1/3 Net—that’s one shilling, and one shilling and threepence, respectively. The Net suffix referred to the Net Book Agreement, which prohibited retailers from selling below the listed price. It was a safeguard to ensure smaller booksellers weren’t undercut by larger wholesalers.
Online, these little gems now fetch anywhere between £4 and £20 apiece. I managed to bag mine for a mere pound each!

The British are a funny lot, they are. Put up a sundial with less than nothing days of sun.

The East of England is very underrated on tourist wish lists, especially for those coming from overseas. Mention classic English villages and most would recommend the Cotswolds. But the wool towns (and villages) of Suffolk are equally stunning. The half-timbered, colourful houses are a delight to behold; my favourite being Lavenham, named the best-preserved medieval village in Britain.

The Llandoger Trow, the pub in Bristol that supposedly inspired Daniel Defoe and Robert Louis Stevenson with the character Robinson Crusoe and the Admiral Benbow Inn of Treasure Island, respectively, is still going strong after 350-plus years. Many think this is where Defoe met Alexander Selkirk, whose four years and four months of castaway life inspired the story of Robinson Crusoe.
