Just found this technique exploration in my reel drafts from 2024. I modeled and animated this in Blender. Glitched in Davinci Resolve. I need to revisit this idea with a more fleshed out board and a more fitting product. I think this was a Ralph Lauren fragrance(?) but this concept would fit more with a tech product — maybe a VR headset or video game like Bladerunner 2049 or a watch or something. Iunno. Anyway. Playing with contrast (tight lens vs. wide lens, steady cam vs. rowdy cam) and a “Bad Romance” concept for Ralph Lauren “Romance”. Which lens do you prefer: a sophisticated 85mm or a rude 14mm? I shot this on July 4th, 2021. My wife had decided to crash early that night (being pregnant and all)so I headed to the roof with a camera. Brooklyn is magical on July 4th. You can see fireworks in all directions for hours. Friends and neighbors gather on rooftops. It's one of New York's most charming offerings. I’ve made hundreds of little video vignettes like this over the years just for fun but then leave them to languish on a hard drive. I don’t know why, exactly. I haven’t looked at this video since then, for example. Most pieces, like this, don't have have an explicit purpose or a context within which they makes sense. They're just… a thing? But something is brewing in my soul. More of a feeling than a thought at this stage. More sharing. More soul. More vulnerability. More risk. More courage. More life. More art. More making. This piece kind of reminds me of DuckDuck 1.0 when I would just take a DSLR to a roof with friends and that’s what landed me the Levi’s documentary and launched my freelance career almost 15 years ago now.
